Game freezing

Post by Bloodstalker »

I got BG1 installed on my system. It's the three disk set with the expansion, and I have problems running the game. Every 10-20 minutes or so while playing, the game freezes solid. I got no alternative other than to re-start my system.

specs:
BG1 three disk set, full installation.

XP pro
pentium III 1 gig processor
GeForce4 MX 440
Soundblaster live sound
384 RAM
DirectX 9b or whatever the hell it is.

I haven't patched the game due to the readme file telling me I would severely kill the install if I did.

Any help would be appreciated. I may even give you a cookie if you fix it for me :D

I'd re-read the readme if I was you... how can a readme file warn you not to patch  I would patch anyway, and if it still doesn't work then, try Win XP's compatibility mode.

The readme says that the three disk version of the game includes the latest patches. It also says that installing any of the patches from the bioware site will corrupt the install and the game will start asking for disk 4, disk5 etc. during gameplay. Which, as I have the three disk set, I don't have.

I looked at Biowares site before posting this, and they also have it up that you don't need to patch the game if you have the version I have.

Did you try the compatibility mode?

Compatibility mode would be my suggestion, too.

Another possibility is that since the problem is time-related, it's possible that some other program thinks it should be polling data every so often, and uses the same memory area as BG1. You might check to see what background programs are running on your computer. Anti-virus programs are notorious in this regard. Even screensavers can cause problems. I'd suggest disabling them while playing.

@Bluestorm.. I checked. I Dl the patch, and when it started to run, it said not to install if I had TotSC installed.

RE: Compatablity mode....It's has only worked for me once or twice in the past, I suspect by accident. In any case, it didnt work here either.

fable, I believe you may be on the right track. Esp in light that I now have several programs running weirdly :D I believe I have been infected my some nefarious program

Well, if it is some nefarious program, then best of luck cleaning it out.
