Game stability problem on dantoine
I bught the game this monday and have played ever since... I have left Telos and went to Dantoine and in the are were the Ebon Hawk lands I have game problems. The character dosen't responde correctly on comand. It sort of skips around and the graphic is were slow like less then 1fps, or so it fells. The problem is on this region only, it disappears in buildings, jedi anclave ruins and so on. Anyone no the problem, can it be fixad?!
Please do not spoil anything for me, unless nessecary!
My Computer:
AMD 2000+
Ati 9800 pro 128mb
768mb
winXP SP2
Patched the game to 1.0a

This worked for me, and I think it is the same problem (Obsidian messing with the graphicdrivers ) where the game became unplayable on Dantooine
What can I do as a last resort if the program will just not run?¨
If you are still encountering issues with getting the game to run, there is one last thing you can try which may help resolve certain graphics issues if all else fails. Edit your "swkotor2.ini" file and locate the (Graphics Options) section. Add a new line which includes the following statement:
Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1
I never undestand why somebody want to change ini when there's an option right in the game......
P.S. if you are using ATI, use the update driver from windows update instead newest catalyst.
Because that didn't work. And yes - I am running with latest catalyst and no I could not run the game outside Ebon Harwk on Dantooine even in 640*480 with everything disabled.
It is the game and not the drivers that is the problem.

I found that going to the advanced graphics screen and changing any of the conditions, then changing it back and hitting "accept," will remove the bug in that area that creates the slows. Everytime you reenter that area, however, you'll need to redo it, even if it's just a simple matter of hitting "M" for map, then returning to the main screen--which really bites. I hope Obsidian gets their fix out, this week.

There is no way I'll ever advice somebody to use the drivers from Windows Update. I'd advice to use the latest stable one from the chipmanufactor or from the provider of the card itself if some custom settings exists. This usually means catalyst for ATI and I belive ForceWare from Nvidia - and always the latest stable version.
The fact that obisdian apparently have locked themselves on early version of opengl drivers is a fault of them. Nobody in software development should make such a mistake - especially in the gaming industry.
By downgrading graphics drivers - I would get problems in many other games which were solved by upgrading drivers to the latest.
A generel technical advice is always keeping your drivers up to date.
I'd almost wager if you contact Obisdian or LucasArt (or who ever run support) and say the graphics are jerky (except for Dantooine) they would advice you to update your drivers.

ATI never did driver right, since the begining of radeon series, they always has driver stablity issue. So best choice for ati card is not latest catalyst, use microsoft cetified version instead, you'll have a more stable system. BTW the current microsoft driver DOES solve the datooine issue for everybody I know.

I'm with Xandax on this. In fact, I couldn't even play past the character creation screen until I used the latest Catylst update for my ATI Radeon driver. Stay away from the generic Microsoft updates; they're not intended for specific cards, and from past experience with some of their updates I know they can mess you up badly. If you do use them, be sure (assuming you're on WinXP) to set a System Restore point before applying.

Exactly Fable... no offence, but only fraidy cat n00bz use MS drivers Just Kidding LOL.
Funny, I own a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 256MB, and I have no problems. Unlike Half Life 2. Unlike the Valve issue with hidden .dll files, I think Obsidian hit on a bit of a syntax or possibly feature conflict in their directx coding of the game. Simple enough to fix if you don't mind sifting through the gb or so of code .
To fix this problem, either update to the latest Catalyst drivers, or buy an Nvidia card

Ok, you DON'T have to downgrade your graphic driver on your system. You simply have to place the 4.11 opengl driver file (atioglxx.dll) in the KOTOR2 folder. KOTOR2 will then use the opengl driver in its root folder instead of the one you have installed. That way you can keep your newer driver installed and ONLY KOTOR2 will use the old 4.11 version. Almost every single person with a mainstream desktop ATI Radeon card that has done this correctly has solved their problem with Dantooine. The few cases I've seen that this didn't work were either using an uncommon card, a laptop, or had problems beyond their video driver.
How: http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showt ... hp?t=57459
Also, it's not exactly true that this problem is definitely not with the driver. ATI has had a plethora of problems with backward version compatibility with their OpenGL drivers in the past. I'm not saying it's ATI's problem, but I've been using ATI cards for several years and have had to rollback my drivers due to OpenGL problems on more than one occasion. ATI is notorious for having driver compatibility issues. It's possible that the programmers have implemented some seldom-used method or callback that is no longer supported properly (or is just plain broken) in the DLL. Binary compatibility is pretty easy to break on the Win32 platform.

The only working solution I've picked up for my computer (possible other then downgrading) was to edit the ini file.

Sure. Like I said before, it won't work for everybody depending on which card you have, but it does work for lots of people...me included. I just wanted to make the point that you don't have to remove and reinstall your entire driver suite just to try a different OpenGL driver with KOTOR2...all you have to do is swap out which file is in the folder...MUCH easier!
Most Win32 applications look for a referenced resource (like a DLL) in the path of the .EXE first (i.e., the KOTOR2 folder). If it doesn't find it there, it will lookup the location in the system registry (which will lead it to the OpenGL driver installed with the driver suite).
It's a good trick to keep in mind, as it's useful for using alternate driver versions (or any library resource, for that matter) with certain apps (not just KOTOR2).
