You might try downloading DOSbox, and try running it in that. I've had success with other blatantly DOS-based games that XP wouldn't run, using it. Assuming you want to, that is.

I don't, simply because Daggerfall was to, well, generalized. Think of the dialog options for NPCs in Morrowind: Daggerfall was like that in just about every sense. It had far too much to customize, so that most dungeons followed 10 floorplans, and each guild had 6 (if I recall correctly) quest types they'd give out randomly each time you asked for one. I did like Daggerfall's refusal to give you access to higher level guild functions until you rose through the ranks, as opposed to Morrowind's giving it all to you; but then, there's a mod for Morrowind that makes guild services act like Morrowind. I use that, and I'm happy. :)

I actually liked the huge dungeons and large areas of Daggerfall as opposed to the (much) smaller Morrowind :)
That is also one of the reasons why I'm not that impressed by Morrowind, because in so many aspects it was the same as Daggerfall. So I'm impressed by Daggerfall and loved playing it - but not so much with Morrowind.

But I'm not playing (or even trying to) install Daggerfall again, because the game was very buggy, even with all the patches installed, also because I've got other things to play now.
In a nostiagic moment I still look at the manual and CD, but ... it is better to stay nostalgic :)

Finding the world in the smallnes of the grain of sand
And holding infinities in the palm of your hand
And Heaven's realms in the seedling of this tiny flower
And eternities in the space of a single hour.

With the celebration of Arena's 10 year anniversary, Bethesda Softworks has released a free download of the full game. As mentioned above, it does require DosBox but the game works fine with it. I was unable to install the box version on my newer computer but the download with the DosBox setup is working fine.

I know the feeling. I've been using it to play Darklands successfully.

If anyone's interested, both games are available from time to time up on Amazon. I've seen Daggerfall selling there for about $15, recently.

Neverending story

I tried installing it on my new PC recently, but to no avail. Thanks to the posts above, I'll try it again over the next while. It's definitely a game I play every year or two. I'd say over the years I've spent hundreds of hours playing it but never got anywhere near finishing it. I'd usually go off and explore, and fail the main story. Not even sure what the main storyline is about! Perhaps I'll try to stick to it this time. Is the main plot any good?
Sometimes it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt! (It's good advice, I should try it sometime! :D )

I downloaded Arena today.

It feels like I take one step . . . wait a few minutes, and take another.

And I can't figure out how to pick up that key! :p
