new and improved rebalanaced ranger
new and improved rebalanaced ranger
if the reblanced the IW2 ranger what wud u like to see happen to him? i'd like to see more of a ranger which to a druid what a paladin is to a cleric. More special abilities n stuff. sum basic druid stuff. mebbe with the ability to have a tame pet.

...nice issue
...not that this will change anything - but we could still discuss it.
...some classes are completly useless with 3.x - and especially the ranger (btw. the ranger is even reduced to 1d8 HP in 3.5)
so there would be a need to make the ranger more attractive...
a) as a major or even single classe (means ~10, ~20 or 30 levels taken)
b) as mix-in with 1 to 4 levels taken
for a)
- a better mix of arcane, divine & nature spells (more & more effective "ranger-only" spells)
- should be able to cast slightly more spells per level
- no need to memorize spells (casting like sorcs) would give him an edge against clerics & druids)
for b)
- some low-level resistances, immunities, auras or special feats (need to think what would fit best for a ranger)

actually, the D&D 3.5 ed. Ranger is VERY nice...
- choose between duel-weilding and archery as a preferred style of combat, an get all the feats as he advances (level 1, 6, 12)
- more skillpoints (6/level - i guess that would translate into 2/level in IWD2)
- good Fort AND Ref saves
- evasion at level 9
Hide in Plain Sight (go into stealth when observed by enemies) at level 17
- other bonuses, that won't come into play in IWD2 (animal companion, tracking, endurance, etc)
the 1d8 HP's seem like a fair price to pay, and puts the Ranger on pair with the Monk as a specialized self-reliant warrior with special abilities

1d8 hit points is a "fair price to pay"? For a ranger? These people are supposed to to spend their lives hiking through mountains and living in forests with only the clothes on their back and a knife- they are supposed to be tough. If they're only going to get 1d8 hit points then they should get a CON bonus too.

I would give them two ranger only feats that can be taken at level 6 or higher: Ranged mastery (+1 to hit, +2 to damage on the first level, +2 to damage & extra attack on the 2nd level). These feats might make ranged weapons actually matter in this game.
I would give them better Nature's Ally summoning spells. Start them out with level 3 instead of level 1.
I would make them immune to enchantment or evocation spells at level 10 and give all allies within 10 feat +4 on saves.
i think better spell casting definitly wud be kl, but i always thought of the ranger as a sort of warrior type really, and more combat orientated
Rangers are supposed be opportunistic warriors. They're more reliant on ambush or hit-and-run tactics in melee than in toe-to-toe combat.

theoretically right - but AFAIK none of these are implemented in any CRPG so far!
and even then with the 3.5 MC-rules most MC builds are much better and especially as mix-in the ranger is weak!
...skillpoints are quite worthless in CRPGs and a fighter get the free feats faster via bonus feats!
additional I would give ranger:
- the sorc casting abilities (no need to memrize spells - rangers shouldn't study scrolls like wizards)
- sneak attacks when fighting in nature

ranged
i like the idea about ranged mastery. ranged weapons are pretty crap in IW2 and wish they were better. Also I reckon there should be a lot better ranger specific items. I've always thought of them as fighter/druids with a bit of rogue, but they dont really any get any of the gd aspects of these classes! what about rangers that have better druid spells. rangers that are more stealthy?
what i would REALLY like to see is a ranger who specialises at ranged combat. ability to uses all ranged weapons and weapon focus n stuff like that.

in the early editions a ranger was a fighter with a mix of cleric and wizard spells - similar to a paladin...-...but that day druids weren't implemented in D&D!
with this background I personally have some problems to see a ranger as a fighter / druid (similar to a paladin = fighter cleric) especially when most fighter druid MC-builds are much better then a ranger!
From my point of view a ranger is primarly a fighter focussing on bows or dual-wiedling-swords who can cast a mix of arcane, cleric & druid spells with some rogue abilities when fighting outside!

uhuh
but they got nothing that makes them unique. rogues have stealth and sneak attack, barbarians have kick ass rage and strength attacks. Paladins have items, quests, aura of courage n saving thros and lay on hands. wizards and sorcerors hav spells. clerics have healing. druids have shape shift. monks have all kindsa crap. bards have songs.
RANGERS HAVE NOTHING. well ok they have a little of some stuff but not enough to be useful

if you give rangers the sorc/bard ability to cast spells then they would have something very unique!

About Rangers in another D&D game.
The one D&D game that I know of where the Ranger class may be truly done some justice is 'The Temple of Elemental Evil.' I don't know about 'Neverwinter Nights,' as - honestly - I haven't played it.
ToEE is 3.5 Edition rather than 3rd Edition, and seems to follow those rules very well. The game does give Rangers the ability to pick a certain combat style (2-handed combat or ranged combat) at 2nd level, while at 6th level they gain the effects of a certain feat associated with the combat style they chose at level 2. Also, they gain their first spells and the capability to summon an animal companion at level 4.

Hey, wait a minute! I know what you're up to! You wanna lure away my flock to your forum! Go, go back to the abyss you've come from, my dear ToEE mod
As for ranger, I've always liked the concept of a real human character (I'm not fond of rangers from other races). He's the one I picture as the more human-like adventurer: human abilities, human powers, human goals... He is THE human in the Realms for me.
