YABPP (Yet Another Best Party Post)

Post by Cygnus »

Here are my ideas for the best good and best evil party where you create all the characters yourself. First, some rules:
1. For convenience, I don't mix two handed weapons with shields, or ranged weapons with dual wielding.
2. A thief is a necessity.
3. A bard is very useful for identifying items.
4. A good party should have diverse weapon proficiencies as to best take advantage of the most powerful magic weapons.
5. Why have 6 characters when you can get away with 4?

Here's my idea for best good party:
1. Human Thief/Mage
Proficiencies: Shortbow, Longsword, Single Weapon Style
Best weapons: Blade of Roses +3, Short Bow of Gesen, Tuigan Bow w/ Arrows of Piercing/+2
2. Human Inquisitor (Keldorn)
Proficiencies: Two handed sword, Two handed weapon style, Crossbow
Best weapons: Carsomyr, Light Crossbow of Speed, Bolts of Lightning/Biting/+2
3. Human Ranger/Cleric (Jaheira)
Proficiencies: Flail, Warhammer, Sling, Sword and shield style
Best weapons: Flail of Ages, Crom Faeyr, Sling of Everard
4. Half-elven Blade (Haer'Dalis)
Proficiencies: Two weapon style, Katana
Best weapons: Celestial fury, Dak'kon's Zerth Blade

Here's my evil party:
1. Human Kensai/Mage (Thief/Mage see above)
Proficiencies: Quarterstaff, Two Handed Weapon Style
Best weapon: Staff of the Magi
2. Dwarven Fighter/Cleric (Viconia)
Proficiencies: Flail, Warhammer, Two Weapon Style
Best weapons: Flail of Ages, Crom Faeyr
3. Half-orc Fighter/Thief (Korgan)
Proficiencies: Longsword, Single weapon style, Shortbow
Best weapons: Blackrazor, Short Bow of Gesen, Tuigan Bow w/ Arrows of Piercing/+2
4. Half-elven Blade (Haer'Dalis)
Proficiencies: Two weapon style, Katana
Best weapons: Celestial fury, Dak'kon's Zerth Blade

Ideas, comments, disagree? Let me know.

This is a work in progress and I welcome any input. (For the benefit of those who don't like creating their own party, I've included the names of likely NPC replacements.)

Coming from a PNP background I enjoy playing with a party I created myself. I have always liked creating characters. Leaving a couple slots open allows me to have NPCs travel with me. I haven't found any quests I could not do because I created more than one character. And by copying the save game file from the multi-player to the single-player directory, I don't have to start a server every time I play. Perhaps a poll is in order?

My current party:

1 mage
1 thief
1 fighter

No one character has more than a total of 27 ability score points. No weapons greater than dagger.

The thing is when you create a party yourself...whether its 3 or 4 or 6 chars...you take away from the need for creativity with working with what the game give you...think about it...if you were really in that world...would you get to pick and choose what class\skills the people you ally with will have? Or would you just make friends and then work together with whatever skills they come with?... just my thoughts

For me, experimenting with various character combinations is half the fun. That elven Fighter/Thief/Mage get killed every other battle, try a different class for the protagonist. Does the party lack tanking ability, add a Barbarian. Even in my PNP days I would create characters just for the fun of it. Now I'm curious. . . Who plays with a party of NPCs and who plays with their own party?

That's not a party, thats 3 troglodytes on a field trip. I didn't know ability scores got that low; what if they forget to breath or break themselves while walking? Image
Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time

Ow. They frequently become exhausted 1/3 way through a battle, making them suffer penalties because of fatigue. Even after they've just rested. But lo! We have slain several trolls so far.

LOL! Seriously, I still am.

So, Foul, you must mean "27 ability points above 60", right? I do the same when I'm pounding away on that reroll button, just total the 2nd digit until they add up to 25 or so.

Meanwhile, the thief, the mage, and the fighter are all wondering why Nalia is ignoring them and asking Bernard if he needs another waitress...
