What Would you rate ToEE?

Post by Kienan »

I want to know if this game is worth getting. What do you think of this game? Pros? Cons? Probably most people here will give it a good rating though. After all, you would probably not be in this forum if you did not like the game. :)

I'm going to respond to the poll including patches into my considerations. Without the patches, the game is too buggy to even play. With patches, it is truly an exceptional game, though still with a couple flaws. The combat and character mechanics are top notch and done well. Details polished, it shines.

Agreed, most voters are likely to like the game, and it is really great in some areas.

I gave it a 6 and i've gone through it 11 times. For me, it's about what you get for the bucks you pay.

It's a really great Rpg game, great graphics, music and especially the character mechanisms & 3.5 rules compability (which i simply love) but :

A 6 because it's too short in gaming hours, it's horrible broken without patches, nearly broken without fan-based patches (co8) and to linear (or again, too short)

A sequel with twice as many adventure locations and thrice as many quests with some meaning, and level cap of 15-20 would most likely be worth a 10 IMO.

But i'm likely to play this again from time to time, maybe solo to 20 with the new temple.dll....

Have fun ;) ;) ;)

My view of ToEE.

I'm giving it an 8, patched an un-patched.

Strong rule implementation, very balanced classes, and strong gameplay are what power this game.

My biggest downsides are the lack of extra customization of characters aside from stature and hair detail, and - like Mulligan - the lack of a strong story.

Still, I am VERY impressed.

I give it a 6. It's a good game but it has lots and lots of problems. It's not just the bugs and performance problems, the manual lacks quite a bit of info, there's problems finding people and places since the maps aren't labeled and quests don't give enough details so sometimes you're not really sure what you're supposed to do or where to go.

I gave this game a 5.It was released to soon therefore making it a very buggy game.I also beleive it isnt on the same level as the Baldurs gate games graphically or fun wise.Still a 5 out of 10 is a decent score.

TOEE is a ver technical RPG, but still lots of fun. Personally, the big battles (the battles with many enemies) were amazing, as well as the Elemental Node bosses. The rule implementation is the best ever.

I did the review here at GameBanshee, so my opinions are expressed in it, already. But basically, if you want to know whether you'd like the game, list the top 3 things you look for in an RPG, then weigh those against the salient points, positive and negative, I mention in my review. They stood out in such strong contrast that I think two people with very different tastes in RPGs could find equal reason to like or hate the game.

An 8

I loved the game. But its not the best I have played. Maybe I should have given it a 9... hmm.

So far I'm really not liking it ... lots of crashes. A 5 I guess, because I like the character maker.

And does it make any sense that you can assign a female portrait to a male character and vise versa ... was it really that hard to add a little detail like that ...
I did almost all the first town quests and recieved 2 times less exp than just killing 2 trader spies.

Worst Troika game evur. It almost seems like they didn't complete it.
I'm going to buy Arcanum soon ... hopefully it won't be so dissapointing.

Just to hopefully convince you to give the game another chance, if you're having lots of crashes it's because you haven't patched it well enough. Granted, the game should work out of the box, but the development was rushed by Atari, to the designer's chagrin, and the result was a choppy game. It's been fixed now, though, and runs great with patches. Spend a half-hour getting fixed and it'll play great. Also, try going into the temple before giving up. The quests are absolutely not where this game shines. It's about character development and tactical combat. Go battle the temple bugbears (who have barbarian or rogue levels often as not) and ogre shamans. You'll be glad you did. I can understand you giving the game a 5 if you've only played a little bit, but it'll grow on you and you'll repent, I expect.

I just bought ToEE and I've only played a few days ( a lot of hours, though), but people are right that it's buggy and a little hard to control sometimes. Does anyone know an active site where I can get a patch for it?

There are many places to get patches, but the most active modding site is co8.org.

You can get the official atari patches here:

http://www.atarisupport.com

Install patches 1 and 2 only, and then install temple.zip by Moebius by copying the contents of the zip folder to your main game directory and adding the contents of the zip's "data" folder to your game's "data" folder:

http://www.jadri.com/temple.zip

This will clear up almost all bug issues. There are tons of fan fixes, with the co8 3.0.4 fix being the most widespread. A new AI/general fix is in the works by Livonya, and is much anticipated.
