on a side note, a probably dumb question:

what happens to spellcasters past level 20? I of the spell known (where applicable) and spells per day progression up to level 20... then as per the actual rules in D&D, there is no progression past that. How does Icewind Dale 2 handle that? Does my sorcerer/wizard continue to gain more spells per day/known? Or not?

I.e. would it be better to have a Sorcerer 30, or Sorceror 29/Paladin 1, or Sorcerer 20/Wizard 10?

I'm currently going through the game again after quite awhile, with:
1. One Pure Sorcerer 14 (so far)
2. Two Pure Clerics 14 (Talos & Tempus)
3. One Rogue 7/Fighter 4/Wizard 3

... and forgot that detail...
Thanks.
They get more spells after level 20 although quite slowly. And the effect of some spells keeps growing too. The paladin level tend to mean less and less as the char level grows but from your list I'd say the sorcerer 29 / paladin 1 is the "most powerful".

I played a sorcerer/paladin/warrior at one point, Assimar, 2 levels of paladin and then even levels of warrior and sorceror. He was quite a spellsword at the end.

hmm.. nice point. i think i will do that. give the sorcerer one paladin level after getting 9th level spells. she's got decent dex, and with sheild+haste+ghost armor, is duking it alongside the others when i feel like being stingy on the spell department on certain fights. killed a werebear alone, after hitting it with a fireball and a magic missile, with her dagger. can't wait till i can get tensar's transformation :D

i'd think i'll give the dwarven cleric of tempus 4 fighter levels about character level 18-22 too, if only for the axe specialization.

thinking about doing a solo alongside as well with a drow:
- ranger 1/paladin 1/monk 1/sorcerer x....

Remember the penalties for leveling up that come with that combination, as well as the slow leveling up for being a more powerful race (drow). You will be considered 2 levels higher than normal, but you will progress much more slowly. What are you trying to get from those single level classes?

yeah. i have been debating to myself and thinking things over.

to answer your question:
Sorcerer: the spellcasting ability of course
Monk: Evasion i believe that it is granted in the 1st level? by the GB ref.
Ranger: TWF+Ambidex. Maybe dropping this out if monk needs 2 levels. nothing big here.
Paladin: the ability to add all the charisma to all saves, and to satisfy the requirement for the reliable and powerful weapon.

i have decided to take the xp penalties for a few reasons:
- i am trying this as a solo. since xp gained in not divided, the gaining of xp is already faster than normal.. making taking the penalities perhaps acceptable?
- the xp gained scales with level... so i should be gaining the penalized xps with more xps from the same/weaker creatures later into the game

two things which i'm not so sure are:
- enemies scaling with level, so being lower level, I will face easier opposition, which will mean less xp granted
- is the level 30 cap an experience cap? meaning that at ECL 30, the drow (2) ranger(1)/monk(1)/paladin(1)/sorcerer(25) cannot advance farther..?

no no, at the end of the game on HOF your drow sorc gets 30 levels, making him have an effective character level of 32. So, end game, ecl races are superior.

Sorcerers do tend to be a little over powered in D&D games, (monks also come to mind). Think about it, once you get to level 18 all you really have to to before a major battle is protect yourself from evil, then run in and cast gate. While your enimies fight for their lives you bombard them with spells!!! To me it seems almost unfair. Dont get me wrong, there are ways around Gate, but it does normally deal with most encounters.

...sorcs are definetly the most powerfull SC, and one of the best major classes in MC-build, but monks?

...at least in IWD2 (due to HOF) they are quite a weak choice - besides using them as a minor class in MC-build where they could be the key to success!
