Ankheg armor

Post by Chrizum »

How to get it? The smith says it would take him 10 days to craft one, but I returned 12 days later and he doesn't sell it.

Taerom "Thunderhammer" doesn't sell it. You have to actually agree to have him make it for you and give him some serious cash for doing so. Once the tenday is up he simply gives you the armor the next time you come in. It costs a sizeable amount of money, so check that you had enough to begin with, otherwise he might not have made it for you. Also check to see if the Ankheg shell from your inventory is gone. There is another set of Ankheg armor to be found, but that is definately a spoiler. If you want to know where to grab it:

Spoiler

If you need some cash, try going to the farm looking area where there is an ankheg nest in that area and a quest to be had as well as a joinable NPC (Ajantis). There you can grab somewhere around 15 ankhegs and can sell some of the shells (not have them made) to taerom for 500 a pop. (Note: Only have one in your inventory at a time or he will take them all for only 500 in all.) The ones you want made keep in a chest or something in his shop and one at a time have him make a suit of armor for 4k a piece and waiting for 10 days. Hope this helps you.

Also use the baldurs gate walkthrough and look in (highlight to read) Nashkel city in order to see exactly where to look for the ankheg premade suit.

I've got two sets of Ankheg Armor (one made by the blacksmith and the other from a SPOILER in the walkthrough), but the problem is now that I have 16 ankheg shells from clearing out their nest and the blacksmith won't buy the shells OR make them into armor for me. Is this a bug or is there someplace else I can have these made into armor or sell them?

Once you ask him to make the suit for you, you can't sell him any shells.

I can, he buys all me shells, even when I already sold 3 of them. Maybe that's why he doesn't sell me the armor?

I think you might misuderstand. I don't think once you have him make you the set of Ankehg armor, you can sell him shells any more (well at least I can't). It's a different dialogue option to have him make the suit for you, something like "Times are really tough...you know I could make armor out of this"....something like that. He never "sells" a suit of the armor, he charges you 4,000 gold to make one for you. He will only make one set and (in my experience) once you agree for him to make the suit for you, he won't buy any more shells.

Sorry I forgot to add this: So the best way to handle it (I think) is to gather as many shells as you can, sell them to him, one by one, otherwise he will take ALL shells for 500 gold, then save one final set to have him make the suit for you. I just actually started playing a Paladin (never played one) and plan on taking him all the way through. Anyway, I just actually picked up the armor a few of nights ago, and after I got the armor he made for me, he wouldn't buy any more shells.

You'd think that he'd buy more shells after you gave him 4000 gp to make one set of armor, especially since iron has been rusting away. Now I have 16 Ankheg shells that devestated my low level party to acquire, and nobody to buy them. Isn't there a dwarf in Baldur's Gate that purchases them later?

Yeah that sucks. The first time I played through, I did the same thing. I did much more experimenting the 2nd+ games. I was just happy to get that nice armor fairly early in the game. As far as any dwarf who buys them in BG, I'm not sure.

There still is hope for those looking to make money off of Ankhegs in Chapter 5. Highlight for spoiler.
There's a dwarf in the bottom part of the West District (the one you end up in if you try to enter the district from any direction other than the upper-right Central lNW Districtsof Baldur's Gate city that takes Ankheg shells for 250 gp a shell. The walkthrough makes this sound repeatable, but I haven't tested it.

I wonder if that may help.

Yeah, I remember this dwarf, but I don't remember if he takes more than one. If he does then I'll feel much better about destroying so many ankhegs for their shells. It seems a great waste to not be able to sell certain things in the game. Without the patches and fixes, you can't sell staves, slings, most ammo, and a variety of other things that you'd think shopkeepers would find intriguing. I don't like being wasteful.

Are we talking magical or non-magical versions of those items? Magical I can make some gold off of. Non-magical I can defnitely see as worthless.

Well, you'd think shopkeepers would buy magical bullets and bolts most of the time, but they don't always. I guess it's kinda understandable that a club or a stave wouldn't be worth anything. It's firewood, right? But if you had enough of one item, wouldn't it be worth a few gp?
