I see this mentioned a lot. to turn off 'background tasks' if the game is laggy.
But which ones?(I assume 'tasks' means processes?)
i tried killing all of them, but my desktop disapeared!
it came back again but so did a lot of the background tasks as well.
thanks in advance for any help
Background tasks?
Well...try with a few you don't need while playing. You can't get rid of all of course, otherwise your computer won't do anything anymore.
Examples of what you could turn off easily:
Instant Messengers, Chat Clients, P2P Software....if you aren't online at that moment: Firewall, On Access Virus or Spyware scans.

system processes
if you are running xp and do ctrl+alt+del it gives you a list of running processes. look to see which are system and which are you as logged on user. you can safely turn off most of the user ones, but be cautious about system ones.
there is an utility that analyses your processes looking for spyware and trojans. might be worth installing it. it gives a 'safety rating' to each process.
also - check your graphics options and turn down the details - gameplay is always a compromise between your computer's resources and realism. your machine could probably handle massive number of facets/objects but doing so will slow the frame-rate. I prefer smoothness to realism and if that means turning off some shadows then so be it.
some computers crash when they try to process too many projectiles at once - but if you have celerity 5 - just watch those bullets come at you (and you can count how many the engine has to calculate for) - it's like the Matrix - in the SoL cave - I was watching rounds from braddocks coming at me and having time to move out of the way - celerity 5 is that good!

I think I have said this in another thread somewhere, but you can get quite an improvement in performance by removing some of sound files, stuff like background music that kicks in to make big action sequences more exciting!
The is no option that I found for reducing sound quality any other way!
I have quite a fast PC based on the NForce 2 mobo with soundstorm and I def got a bit of a boost in performance when I did this.
Turning down Graphics seting s did nothing for me, but then I do have an G/force 6800 gt with 256 of mem!
I think on the whole tho the games poor performance is down to poor coding [mem leaks and stuf] but it is a good game so worth the trouble!

A good site for a description of Windows XP services--what they do and which can be disabled can be found at Blackvipers.
