Does anyone know how its progression works? Is it by level or every time an event happens or what? For soem reason after 2 times (on my 3rd) through the game I can't get to stage 9. I usually end up being stuck around stage 4.

To upgrade it, the crystal needs to not be equipped on a light saber. It needs to be in your inventory, and you need to talk to Kreia about it. She'll tell you if its ready to be upgraded or not.

I'm not sure if its upgrade status is directly related to your accumulated light/dark points, or if its related to your character's experience progress. My inclination would be to that latter.

I believe it can be upgraded every two levels or so. This means going to Dantooine early can be advantageous, since you'll probably not get many levels if it's your fourth planet. (for story-reasons)
The bonuses, however, depend on your class and alignment.
