BGTUTU is Great

Post by David Coath »

Dear All

Just a note to say how much fun we have been having with Tutu. The list of features is too long to mention but it is as if BG 1 is a prelude to BG 2.

We started a game and picked up some new NPC's including Finch who is real fun. Kevan as a Ranger Archer Kit is very solid too.

We have started a couple of games to see which NPC's work in the best. We arrived at

Main character - Paladin
Agantis - Paladin
Minsc - Ranger
Kevan - Ranger Archer
Finch - Cleric
Imoen - Thief going to dual class as Thief /Mage

Good party with lots of colour but it has problems , Agantis is too weak, You have to live without a mage until Imoen gets some decent thieving levels. This is offset by Finch and her glasses. Finch runs forward a bit because she is quicker. She gets drilled by bows a bit but it was her decision to become a librarian / adventurer.

Even better we started a party of 6 that was so powerful we had to change the game difficulty up to Difficult. It could handle insane as well I think.

Paladin
Paladin - Undead killer which will be good in BG 2
Ranger kit archer
Ranger kit archer
Cleric ( long bow equip )
Thief/mage multiclass ( long bow equip)

The ranger kit archers are so powerful early and account for almost 70 % of the kills. Even on difficult in multiplayer mode Alex and I can go into a new area and operate as 2 sub parties and deal with most of what we find. Sometimes we have to fall back onto each other for support but generally a Paladin/Archer/other can opertae as a corp

Great game made better by the efforts of the Tutu modifiers.

Thanks to all involved

Glad you are having fun! :)

And yeh, it is a bit of a shame that the BG2 kits are pretty powerful at the low levels of Tutu.

What the heck are Tutu's anyway? I see people talking about them, but don't know what they are.

Dear Andyr

Thanks , it was very much your help that got us through the loading and allowed us to overcome the ( in retrospect) small technical issues.

Thomas 77 , in answer to your question on what is Tutu. It is a software modification that allows you to play BG 1 through the BG2 engine. The advantages are:

you get access to BG 2 kits such as ranger archer kit , various Paladins etc
you can pause in you inventory. in BG 1 you could be attacked while sorting
BG 1 story and import into BG 2 is better ( i am yet to confirm this)
It permits multiplayer mode
Experience caps for BG 1 are removed

In essance it allows you to start the BG 2 tale from a single level character in BG 1 . It makes the whole adventure longer and the story makes more sence.

All in all, with a few extra mods from Pocket Plane such as "ease of use" it becomes a fresh start to the adventure

Highly recommended

Another advantage I think is pretty important is the higher resolutions you can get with it. :)

Check out http://www.pocketplane.net/tutu for more info.

Yeah, does anyone know of good mods for BG1 without TUTU and changing BG's play style too much?

Who is Finch ?

BG Tutu

Dear Curry and Erenor

The answer to all your questions will be found in the link that Andyr has in his comment above. It takes you to a BG game development site called Pocket Plane. I would expect that this name is taken from the plane that exists in Throne of Bhaal.

Anyway at Pocket Plane there is a community of people interested ( perhaps to a level that is unhealthy :p ) in the playing and developing of the BG Trilogy.

You will find forums and most interstingly modifications that develop and ( I believe) improve the game.

In answer to Curry's question one such modifation is the addittion of a character called Finch. She is a hobbit who is a librarian . I think you find her in Bergost. She is a new NPC and like other NPC's has a quest and dialogue. She says so interesting things, runs quickly and is a good cleric. She also has Glasses of Identification so she is handy at identifing your magical items. She also carries a scroll case that I would suspect is bottomless as we could not fill it. She is a great party memeber and a lot of fun.

As I have explained above we have selected the Tutu mod which allows you to play the BG 1 game through the BG2 engine. This is great but we have added some other mods including ease of use which permits you to manage your inventory easy by permiting higher numbers in the stacks of items such as arrows and gems. Also items such as gem bags and scroll cases are avaliable in BG 1. Also characters are not restricted to weapon types and so my cleric can use a bow if they have appropriate skills.

Have a look and see what is there at Pocket Plane. I am sure that you will find something of interest.

All the best

Dear Thog

I have just had a quick look at pocket plane again and I can see what you are saying.

May I suggest that you post a question either here or on the pocket plane forum advising what BG game you have and I am sure that someone will guide you through. People at both Banshee and Pocket Plane have been very helpful with our questions.

If you have enjoyed any of the BG games then I am sure you will have fun with the mods.

@Lonelypilgrim No you don't get your BG1 items in BG2, because of *story elements* (however there is a bit of a cheat that allows you to keep it ;) )
And yes, dual-classed mages can wear robes.

Highlight to read the cheat >> "as soon as the "loading" screen is gone in the beginning, pause the game. At this point you still have the equipment. Drop it on the ground and unpause the game. This will bring about a cutscene, and your equipped items and stuff in inventory is lost. However, the stuff you dropped wont disappear. Note that this is quite hard to time correctly!

To the best of my knowledge, there are very few mods for BG1 without TotSC on it's own. Most require Tutu, because the BG2 engine allows for a lot more possibilities. :)

However, I do know that one of the mods in development at http://www.pocketplane.net will be for BG1 (Echon's mod The Fields of the Dead). The old mod Dark Side of the Sword Coast is also being revived over at http://www.chosenofmystra.net - though personally I would suggest trying to get hold of BG2 and playing Tutu.

Tutu, like all other fan-made mods, is free.
