Strange...KOTOR2 creates GUIDs

Post by justabeginner »

In your Windows registry, under:

HKLM > Software > Lucasarts > KOTOR2

It seems KOTOR2 makes a GUID for you. Since you don't enter any form of serial number or CD Key when you install the game, it has to be based on a hardware hash of some sort, probably hard disk serial numbers, MAC addresses (if a network card is available), etc.

Why would a non-multiplayer game need GUIDs?

Possible for use with the "update" functionality from the game menu.
I doubt however it would be hashed from hardware because that would not provide any functionality for the game/update procedure.
Much more likely it is a code in the software/install which authenticates the game.
