The VTM setting got discontinued by White Wolf and is currently not in print anymore. However, you might want to see if you can get your hands on the last book called "Gehenna". Gehenna is finally here and that book describes it in great detail. I think it's a good read since the game deals with a lot of signs of Gehenna, from Thin Bloods to the possible rise of Antediluvians.

Other than that, any VTM source books or novels are fine really. :)

Vampire fiction

going away from the game itself, but Bram Stoker's original "Dracula" and the contemporary "Interview with the Vampire" by Anne Rice are the core fiction for this genre.
Anne Rice has done a marvellous job of bringing vampire fiction into the modern era and the characters/processes in the game are somewhat her take on vampire fiction in a tale told without sensation.

VtM is in the same line as Stocker and Rice, though markedly different in a number of places. While I enjoyed Rice's books they are not always as easily digestible for some readers. If you're looking for things more like the game (complete with clans and political intrigue), your best bet is to go directly to White Wolf materials (which are mostly very good).

If you're looking for gaming book tie in's I'd recommend starting with the "Vampire the Masquerade" source book. There are a plethora of later things, but its a good introduction to the other literature. Gehenna is a good book, but I think requires more than Bloodlines knowledge to fully appreciate. There's even an L.A. by Night sourcebook (which is very dated, but a nice L.A. tie in; I actually based a campaign I'm running on it and Bloodlines).

If you're simply looking for more novel like things to flesh out the genre, there is a whole line of White Wolf novels most of which are fairly good and very easy to read. I enjoyed the clan novel series which was out a few years ago (i.e. they are named Clan Novel Toreador, Clan Novel Gangrel, etc.). The novels are very easy to read and really entertaining. They are a good way to experienced the VtM world in more depth. I imagine they can be had cheap in most used book stores or online sites. You can still buy them at Barnes and Noble, the White Wolf store, and Amazon sites.

White Wolf has moved on from Vampire the Masquerade material and is now producing Vampire the Requiem material. It's similar, though different in a few important places from the world presented in Bloodlines. Still, there is a whole series of gaming books and novels being produced now.

It shouldn't be a problem to get some of the old Vampire:The Masquerade books and novels. My local Fantasy RPG store still got some of them.

If you want to read novels, try to get your hands on the Clan Novel series from Whitewolf.
If you want to play Pen and Paper Vampire, the Core rulebook and the Sabbat and Camarilla Sourcebooks should still be available.

I recommend the library. Seriously, they have THOUSANDS of paper backs.
The waves came crashing in like blindness.
So I just stood and listened.
