"using items"

How do I use items that cannot be placed in quick slots? Wardstones for instance..

Many quest items such as wardstones are used automatically. They just have to be in your inventory, no need to equip them. When you get to the point when they are needed (e.g trying to enter a warded door) they'll be used automatically, you don't have to do anything.

Quickslots are for items that have more charges - scrolls, potions, wands for instance.
