Backstab? Do you guys really use it?
Do you really use backstab? Although I don't even have a thief in my party anymore (well Nalia, but let's get real... She can't even pick her nose, so forget about any kind of lock at all!), I never got it working for me. Tried it a few times, with the golems for instance but Yoshimo always missed (He wasn't a great trapsetter either). Do you have to hide in shadows first and than attack from behind? What the battleplan? I really want a thief in my next game, so I really would like to know. Cool says:

To have your threads closed, or not to have your threads closed... THAT'S THE QUESTION!
Yes, you need to be hidden in the shadows, otherwise you can't sneak upon them from behind, now can you?? Hide in the shadows and ATTACK FROM BEHIND! In BG 1 you could also backstab from the front, but this doesn't work in BG 2 anymore. Equip your thief with Boots of Speed though; once he makes the attack, he becomes visible, and the boots make for a quick getaway ...

I used it through out most the game. If you have boots of speed just walk up behind the enemy while your hidden and stab him then pause the game and pick a place to run to that is not in the line of sight of the enemy. Like around a sharp corner or in a different room. Unpause it and let your character run till you do not see the red highlight around the enemy and press hide again. Then backstabb again. If you have a good thief you will be able to kill off just about any humanoid npc like this. If you dont feel its cheating you can hit wizards while they are still blue and have no protections up.
Backstabb is not very helpful during group battles. You will have the best results if you leave the group someplace the monsters will not see them and send the thief out alone. If you have boots of speed dont worry about getting killed. There is not many things that can catch you. Watch out for hold person and charm and confusion type spells.

You must be stealthed *and* behind the enemy (to get them in the back y'know). It doesn't always work. x4 or x5 damage can kill some NPC's outright. Even if you don't get the backstab or miss first time you usually get the first strike - backstab with poison weapons to disrupt mages then let 'em die, slowly

You also need to be using a weapon suitable for backstab. These are (at least): dagger, short sword, and IIRC the longsword. If your weapon is not suitable, but everything else about the backstab was kosher (in shadows, behind opponent, successful hit) you will get a message in the text box telling you so.
Hmm, I'm really not sure about backstabbing with longswords. I know I used BS with my Stalker, but he was dual equipped, usually with one shortsword.

I think backstab is great. I will send my thief in stealth mode (and wearing the cloak of non-detection since the baddies always seem to cast true-seeing) and get them behind the enemy mage. Then backstab the mage, which sometimes will kill them, and then use the ring (or potion) of invisibility to disappear before his buddies cut you down.
Its a great tactic that makes it easy to take out enemy mages. With alot of potions you could take out a whole party of bad guys one at a time. But I typically take out the 1 mage and then rush in with the rest of the party and chop them to bits.

You can backstab with any bladed weapon a single-class thief can use, the most potent being the katana.
Going for maximum backstab, I did 274 damage the other night with Celestial Fury: Kensai 13/Thief 15, Str 25 (Holy Might), Kai, critical hit.
Throwing in the effects from a group of Skalds, I got that up to 299. With the Skalds the K/T was hitting for 74-79 in normal combat!

Can stalkers backstabb? I only kept Valygar for a short time so I could enter the planar sphere so I dont know if he has the ability or not. But I believe you cant backstabb with certain special weapons that are made for a select npc to use. Not sure if this is a bug or not but if you get rid of that katana he comes with and get a new one then you should be able to backstabb.Originally posted by Lare:
With Longswords you CAN backstab, but with katanas you can't. Atleast Valygar couldn't backstab with his katanas. (you know valygar is a stalker and may backstab)

Yes stalkers can backstab. And I have to say that backstab is REALLY great. With a fairly high-level thief you can just pick almost any enemy and have him killed without a fight. Add some nice assassin-poison and it rocks totally!

All I know is Dakkon's Blade works and Celestial Fury is probably the best weapon for backstabbing with. Not only do you do lots of damage, but the unfortunate victim has to save vs spell or be stunned.
Since poison stops spellcasting and even with a save an Assasin's poison still does some damage it's a very nice ability to combine with their 7x backstabs.

You can definately backstab with Katana's, done it plenty of times...and they do the most damage on a successful backstab...especially the Celestial fury
If you want to play a really interesting multiplayer game try this...make all thief characters. It's amazing what you can do with 6 backstabbers. I can walk into a situation that is normally difficult and turn it slaughter fest full of of flesh chunks within one round of fighting.
Hate those darn mages that always seems to get protection up before you can take them down? You won't anymore...I remember in the Suldessnar (I know the spelling if off, but I don't want to look it up) walkthrough, it warns of a powerful mage that summons pit fiends and etc..plus he has golems all around him to protect himself while he casts. I put a thief at his back and let the rest of my chars backstab the strongest golem there was. Lets say he never saw it coming..I did 150+ damage to him (which smashed him like a bug) and found the fight rather easy.
My thief strategy...turn off AI, save frequently (your thiefs will miss important backstabs quite often), and position all the thiefs behind who I want them to backstab. Of course they are in the shadows and have a sword equipped (I use longswords). I pause the game, click the appropriate enemy for each of them to backstab, then unpause the game. They will still be in the shadows for a few seconds, unless they successfully backstab. When they miss, it seems they get another swing or two in before the enemy turns around noticing them. Just remember to make your party of thiefs with playing the whole game in mind (if you plan to do so). I used a thief/mage, thief/cleric, 2 bounty hunters, and 2 regular thiefs. I put their skill points into stealth and traps and mainly used their magic for protection spells and some offensive ones (magic missle etc..) for the rare melee resistant enemies.

Wow. I can see how deadly the 6 - thief combo can be. I'm surprised, though, that you didn't consider just one strong stalker. For the sake of HP, proficiencies, THAC0, and # attacks.
But backstabbing with katanas - I too, was told by the game that Valygar's weapon was unsuitable when he backstabbed with katanas. In fact, overall, I found Valygar hugely disappointing after my PC.
Has anyone else noticed a higher backstab multiplier with the PC stalker class? Higher than the kit description promised, that is.

Yes, there are tons of combinations to use when going for a group of backstabbers, and i'm sure many work very well. I had no need for high hp, as I either lost a fight due to important missed backstabs or bad strategy.
Some blue - enemy npc's that have to talk to you before they go red (aggressive) will not iniate dialogue if your party is all in the shadows, which makes for great surprises. Even easier are the enemy npcs that won't go red (aggressive) unless you choose to speak to them. Take the shadow and red dragon for instance. ( I warn you this is cheap, but thiefs are cheap and will do whatever it takes to kill their enemy ) Setup traps around the dragon (especially the shadow dragon, melee hits barely scratch him). Use your cleric/thief to raise/lower his resistance to your level (this is a nonaggreisve spell as it was meant to help party members with low resistance, not bring enemies down to your level). A lot of high resistant enemies will resist traps, that is the reason to do so. Then hide all of your characters, move them in place behind the dragon and pause the game. Set them to backstab the (still blue) dragon and unpause..... Like I said, one round fights, =)

Maybe I am mis-reading what you are saying but in my experience with the game you can not backtabb creatures like dragons and golems. You can get a bonus on thac0 if your hidden but the backstabb multiplier will not work on these large creatures
