WHAT ABOUT CERND?

Post by Festivus »

With Wisdom of 18 and some pretty kick arse powers isn't he a keeper? I dumped Jaheria and took him into the party. If you ask me Jaheria suks as a fighter and a druid.

Cernd is good, really. But only if you want him to be a spell caster... If you need a fighter/spellcaster, then take Jaheira. Although Cernd can change to greater werewolf, it really means nothing later in the game... (since greater wolfware also becomes weak in BG2... I can still remember last time how hard I got to fight with a greater wolfware in BG1-Tales of Swordcoast...)

His AWFUL AC, and the fact that he can't use armor and has little HP (relative), plus that his spells are not outstanding, and neither his shapeshifting abilities ... well, I was glad he moved off once he had his child, so I could put a USEFUL character in his slot ...

well if i remeber correctly i started a topic titled "is it me or is cernd the worst npc?" (or something like that) so u can guess my opinon.

His wisdom is good but that is it, his shapshifting ability is not really that good, i was very dissapointed with the greater werewolf, his ac sucks, his strength is poor and his consitution is nothing amazing, i do like some of the druid spells like insect spawn but they are not good enough to sacrafice a decent character.

Just because an Npc has the max for their prime stat doesnt necessarily make them brilliant, viconia is so good because as well as her 18 wisdom has has 19 dext which means she is good with ranged weapons and thus can stay out of harms way and still do damage, also high dext gives her good ac.

these factors mean that her poor strength and const are compensated for.

Cernd may have slightly better const and strength but his dex sucks. therefore he is not good at melee or ranged combat.

I am sure iam not alone in thinking this, read the topic i posted to see other opinions on him

Cernd is a decent NPC,but he is most useful when your party hasn't reached high levels yet.Towards the end he is mainly a spellcaster. In my opinion if you want to cast druid spells-some of them are very powerful-you should pick Jaheira.
By the time she reaches lvl 13 as a druid she gains more frequently levels as a fighter (many xp to advance further as a driud) and she gets decent THAC0 and HP.Equipped with good armor, club (like +2 Gnasher) and Ironskins she is excellent in the role of a backup fighter.

Ok, lets say we go for Viconia. wouldnt that be a problem with the other npc's. she is after all evil. or does it work fine....
when i rescued her, the rest of my party protested loudly, they didnt want her in the group. is that a sign to ignore?

Current party setup of five NPC's is Minsc, Viconia, Jaheira, Nalia and Imoen.

Works like a charm Image

The only occasional interaction noteworthy is between Nalia and Viconia, or Jaheira and Viconia (besides Viconia and the main of course!). But nothing serious. Minsc and Viconia get along well enough (no comments on one another as it seems). I haven't had Imoen for long yet - I've just arrived in the Underdark - so I don't know if Viconia picks on her.

Bah! People just don't see the economic side of the question.

Viconia won't take a step if she doesn't get fancy magical jewelery and golden sparkling chainmail from Calvin Kleins "La Minimal" collection. Not to mention all the hard earned money that goes into makeup, haircare products and nailpolish.

Jaheira puts a huge drain on anyones gold reserves by dragging the party from one manner of charity work (Save the slaves and shave the whales and whatnot) to another (Save endangered Jaheira from mad shaved slaverwhales or something).

Cernd, however, demands nothing save a steady supply of dogbiscuits and maybe a bone to gnaw on now and then.

You forget the charity funds spent by Nalia. "Oh no, another poor beggar, let's give him a hundred gold, and see if he needs more tomorrow." If she does so with every beggar, you'll be out of gold too fast ... most certainly because the day after, she'll repeat the process. Image

But honestly, have you ever been low on money, after the initial start? Image

Nopers. I just wanted to do my part in taunting the subject of character planning. Image The best group of characters is the one you feel most comfortable with, regardless of their stats and skills.
