Character Creation

Post by l__TK__l »

Okay I wanted to start a new thread about what kind of characters people have played and what were the experiences about them. I played Fallout 1 wit a character like this:

Stats (with Gifted & Small Framed):
STR 5
PER 9
END 4
CHA 6
INT 9
AGL 9
LCK 6

Traits:
Gifted
Small Framed

Tags:
Small Guns
Lockpick
Speech

Perks:
3 Awareness
6 Sharpshooter
9 Bonus Rate of Fire
12 Better Criticals
15 Tag( get energy weapon skill.)
18 Sniper

He shot everything dead in 1-3 shots with turbo plasma rifle. Now I started playing Fallout 2 and made a character like this:

Stats (with Gifted & Small Framed):
STR 4
PER 7
END 4
CHA 8
INT 9
AGL 10
LCK 6

Traits:
Gifted
Small Framed

Tags:
Small Guns
Melee Weapons
Speech

Perks:
3 Awareness
6 Quick Pockets
9 Better Criticals
12 Action Boy
15 Bonus Rate of Fire
18 Action Boy
21 ? (dodger.. does it make a difference?)
24 Sniper

I planned to use Gauss rifle or pistol and Super Sledge. I will take suggestions about the lvl 21 perk cause I don't know what to get. Maybe Gain Luck would be good too gause it would make luck to 9 at the end, so Sniper would have even better chance to make a critical.
So tell me what kind of characters you have made and all the fun experiences with them. It's good to get more ideas so it will be fun to play this game over and over again.

Well - it has been so long ago - so I can't excatly remember the statistic assignment, but I usually went for agility 10 (with small frame and gifted) and high perception 8-10, and luck of around 6 for sniper-characters. Charisma was low-ish around 4, and so was endurance. Strength was likely around 5 and intellegence had left over points (seems to recall it around 7-8 or so, but I can't remember).

I always took small guns as the only consequent tag at start, and selected energy guns when you could select the perk "Tag".

Great. What other perks did you have? What was your favourite energy or small gun? If anyone has used HtH or Melee characters it would be fun to know how it turned out. How much does the Dodger +5 to AC have effect on the game?

I did that too but always hated losing a neat perk for another tag, so I ended up just boosting Energy Weapons 1 by 1 with over time and then poured into it at higher levels. I'd miss out on an early laser pistol but had 101-121% by the time energy guns were abundant.

I played about 3/4 through the game with a 'ninja' character and his cyber-dog, without any of the other npcs and using only melee and throwing for combat. I found it rather difficult and frustrating - there weren't enough skill points to go around since I wanted to pay into flavorful ninja skills like Sneak, Picklock, Steal, HtH, Traps, Throwing. I was also short on stats because I needed to be strong early on and also couldn't take small frame. It wasn't a great character but was sometimes fun to play when I used my imagination to put a ninja suit on her.

Well - I rarely found I was in need of an extra perk, so the "tag" perk was no loss for me.
And dont' even bother with the laser pistols, but stay with small guns until you get decent energy weapons :)
Laser is not decent though, because most armour has good DR/DT against it comepared to both normal weapons, plasma and especially electric (Pulse).

Go with energy weapons and pick which one you want based on who you're fighting and what type of armor they have. I still think Turbo Plasma is the best, but some folks like the pulse rifle or the laser rifle because it has a longer range.

Well - I avoid lasers at all cost, because Laser protection is worse (or better if looking from a defence point of view) then normal damage on all armours-types after leather armours, and the damage they do isn't really worth it when comparing with the DR/DT of said armours.

Then rather use normal weapons until the Plasma becomes availble, because there are some very good normal weapons around in this game (the .223 Autoloader is nice)
And for sheer damage power - the pulse rifle is the highest scoring single shot weapon in the game (well - except for upper limit which is held by the Alien blaster, but I don't really care about that one).

But all this boils down to that I'd personally never select energy weapons as a tagged skill from the start, because you can increase it as a normal skill and still have it high enough by leveling it as a untagged skill, for when you get the decent energy weapons (discounting for instance Laser Pistols which are just plain bad).
Or you can select it as a tagged skill as I usually do at level 12 with the tag, and level it up faster at that time, because you'll not find any decent weapons prior to that (unless you are very lucky)

Then I'd much rather have speech and first aid/doctor/lockpick or something combined with small guns from the start.

Not for your PC, and Enclave guards have a bad habit of doing that. :(

Some high tech weapons are good, but lasers (laster piston and laser rifle) aren't much better then a good number of small guns.

this conversation is getting a bit offtopic :D please write what kind of character you have made and what weapon did you use and how was it. There is no use arguing about what is good or what bad. The game's cool anyways :D

my "gun" using characters usually start with

st 5 + 1(red memory module) + 4 (advance power armour)
pe 9 + 1(green memory module)
en 2
ch 5 + 1 (blue memory module) -2 (....assaultenhancements) +1 (shades)
ag 10
in 9 +1 (y.m.m.)
lk 8 + 2 (z-scan in ncr)

fast shot and gifted as traits
the perks that really was used:
bonus rate of fire
bonus ranged damage (2)
living anatomy
sniper
better criticals
action boy (2)
lifegiver (2)

hehe, 10 ap +2 action boy and fast shot/bonus rate of fire....
the gauss pistol was my favorite, 6 rounds per combat round and all criticals.

sounds good :D I'll have to make the same kind of character then too :D Tell me, is there any use in aimed shot when you have 10 luck and all shots are critical? I would also like to know why is Bozar considered so good weapon cause the damage is a bit low compared to other weapons.

Yes - amied shots towards critical points (especially eyes where applies) are some of the best hits in the game.
You can also break peoples arms (for isntance) with critical shot in a manner so they can't use their 2h weapons.
Break their legs and they walk around instead of running :D

For these reason I've never played with for instance fast shot because I wouldn't want to give up the aimed shot....

Maybe I should install and start up a game again and try it :D

but if the sniper perk makes all your hits critical no matter if they are aimed or not.. then would there be a need for aimed shots anymore? I tought Bozar was a heavy sniper rifle without burst :D it looks just like Barrett M82A1, which is a sniper rifle without burst. I have played Fallout 2 two times trough and never used Bozar. But now I have to try. If I take the sniper perk and have 10 luck, will it make all the bozar burst shots critical and what is the estimated damage of one shot? Oh yeah and Xandax you really should play the game again :D How many times have you played it?

The reason aimed shots are better even with Sniper perk, is that the damage table and effect is different depending on where the bullet "hits" the enemy.
So an amined critical to the eye will most of the time do way more damage then an amied critical to the body, plus the added bonus of the various effect you can cause. Blind, Knocked out, Crippled body parts etc....

You can melt some of the biggest foes in the game with a single aimed shot to the eyes :)
