Not really a fair comparison. Tolkein's characters had more realistic abilities than the high powered heros of current CRPGs. For example look at how few true wizards there were - 5, of which we only meet 2. Besides Aragorn only had that broken old sword he lugged around
Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time

It depends... Is Boo hasted, improved inviso, immune to magical weapons, protected by spell turning, Fire Shield (Blue), and blessed? If so, Minsc wins hands down!

Yeah, Aragorn had an army of undead to support him.
Minsc has a hamster.
Even if he is hasted (look at the wheel go!!!).

bright blue his jacket was and his boots were yellow. Hey merridol, me darling. Tom's got to gather water-lillies for his pretty lady.
I think neither would win. Minsc couldn't actually hurt him (him being Maia demi-god), but Tom wouldn't pay any attention to fight, would become distracted and run off prancing around with Boo.

It really depends on where the fight is at. Home ground advantage is Tom's winning edge. Unfortunately, his away record is not present therefore Minsc will win anywhere else...
I only finished Book II on the weekend and about Chapter IV of BG II, so I don't know how they will fare by their end of the story... But my bet is on Aragorn (looking at breed/heritage) and he should at least be lvl 16 after the battle at Helm's Deep.

Sorcery and Shadow together as one, the arcane and the dark united. Through our knowledge and skill none can stand against us. We are as one, infallible and invincible. The Shadow Mages.
Anyone consider the absurdly high level Aragorn would be as compared to our favorite Hamster-toting warrior? Aragorn probably can't even REMEMBER back to when he was 17th level....
Oh, by the way, that "old broken sword" was recently reforged into the finest sword in 3rd age middle earth....a true artifact likely more powerful than anything any player-character would ever DREAM of owning.
Radagast WAS in the Fellowship of the Ring, but only in retrospect. He was the one that Gandalf said he encountered on the road near the Shire, who then sent out word to all of the birds to keep watch for signs of evil. This action was to prove the means of Gandalf's escape from Isengard.

I'm really jealous of samcu. I wish I could be reading LOTR for the first time. I remember when my dad gave it to me for Christmas. I spent the next two weeks consuming it whole--much more addictive than any mere computer game.
More on topic, I agree that the comparison of the two is not very worthwhile. BG characters are so overpowered and magiced-up from head to toe. If you were to draw up stats for some of the items in LOTR, they really wouldn't seem very impressive by BGII standards. For example:
"Ring of why-the-hell-are-these-creepy-guys-on-black-horses-trying-to-kill-me?!"
STATISTICS:
Special: Improved Invisibility when equipped. Repeated useage causes temporary fits of Chaos and gradual shift to Chaotic Evil alignment.
OR (from The Hobbit):
"Sting"
THAC0: +1 bonus
Damage: 1d4+1
Damage type: Piercing
Weight: 1
Speed factor: 0
Profiency type: Dagger
Type: 1-handed
Special: Grants Free Action on user and causes morale failure in opponents if unsuccessful save vs. spell (-3 penalty for spiders)

C'mon...... The true descendant of the greatest line of Kings and the best of the line since the time or Earendil versus a crazy ranger from the East. But then, Arargorn would probably profit more by convincing Minsc of the worthiness of his cause (what is more Evil than Sauron?), and making him join his band of rangers.
BTW, Aragorn would have more 18s in his statistics than most of our (NON-CHEAT) characters have.
Just to add to the ring statistics:
- If WIS and INT above 18, wearer shifts to Lawful Evil. He then gains control of all cratures of Evil Alignment.
Now you have a truly powerful Item.
