To the best of my knowledge there is no crossbow ammo available in this game (dissenters please post). The only way you can come up with crossbow ammo is to use the console and do the appropriate "give item". I forget what the exact item name is.

Honestly, I'm not sure of any way to get ammunition for the crossbow except through use of the console. It's worth checking ever merchant, including Mercurio. It's possible that some spawns into their sales list once you pick up the crossbow. Otherwise, I've never seen it on them. Likewise, its possible some of the hunters you confront (such as in Ash's quest) have crossbow ammo, as they certainly use crossbows against you. However, my best guess is that's it simply not readily available in the game. Particualrly considering how difficult/rare a crossbow is to get.

A thought just occurred to me. One way of acquiring ammunition for a weapon that is not currently in a merchants inventory--and this assumes that you have the weapon in your inventory--is to sell the merchant your weapon, then buy it back from them, which should allow you to immediately access ammo from the same merchant.

Hope that makes sense.

Good point. That should work. Though, I'd save first, just in case.

I'm not sure, but I thought I found a box with some crossbow ammo in it down in the Nosferatu Warrens, in that area where that freak is throwing corpses at you. It was the first time that I was even aware of crossbows as a possible weapon in the game. Although I later killed various opponents with crossbows, I never get to pick one up. I can't remember if that was because I wasn't allowed to pick them up at all, or else maybe I was carrying too many weapons and items already.

Wow, that works! I found a crossbow in a trunk in the main Kuei Jin barracks, so I sold it to Mercurio then bought it back. Sure enough, he then was selling ammo for it.

Well that's a handy tip (albeit borderline cheese, I suppose) for the crossbow. Have you found it to be an effective weapon?

find some

once you have found the crossbow, if you go upstairs and back to the first guardrooms, they then have crossbow ammo. take that and go back down - you will then find that the chests in the dormitory also have crossbow ammo. you can get 40 arrows in total - I did use it a bit for Minge, but there are so many other useful weapons that I end up putting it into my storage before the final mission.
the killmatic on single shot is fairly good, the anaconda packs a mean punch and is easily re-stocked, the flame-thrower is a must, the brock and other pistol have large clips and the steyr can be picked up from dead SWAT members (TIP stealth kill them after they drop - you soon get a lot of rounds withuot them wasting any on you) that lot leaves little room for the shotguns, jaime sue or the crossbow.

I am not sure, but I think I managed to use the crossbow without blowing my stealth, so if that is so - that you can shoot enemies from behind whilst remaining hidden, it might be better than I thought.
I also think that selling the crossbow and re-purchasing it may work - it seems that you can always buy ammo for a weapon you have been sold.

It's not that impressive, though I used it to kill LaCroix easily enough. It *was* nice seeing orange numbers pop up over his head. What's odd is that there's a noticible interval between the time you fire the crossbow and the time the arrow hits. You almost expect your target to easily step out of the way.

High Power, Low Speed (possible spoiler)

I have a 120 lb crossbow, and one of the peculiarities of the devices is that, while the bolts have a lot of power, they don't have a lot of velocity. Crossbows were, after all, an effort to get an arrow through armor. The primary benefit of a crossbow is it takes very little skill to use one. In archery, the speed of the projectile is dictated by the total length of the limbs of the bow. Hence, a longbow fires arrows faster than a shortbow, even if the shortbow is more powerful, but it's simpler to make a powerful shortbow than it is to make a powerful longbow, because the maximum draw length is about a meter. Crossbows tend to have very short, powerful limbs. For those of you who use compound bows and are about to call "foul!", the effect provided by the cams and cables effectively doubles or even triples the length of the limbs, depending on complexity. Finally, I don't see how crossbows factor into this game. Jack says that a stake, even in the heart, can at best paralyse you. You got staked in the heart right after you were embraced. Hence, logically, a crossbow should be less useful as a weapon than a .38, unless it's a *flaming* crossbow. In that case, it would be the fire that was the problem, not the bolt.
