I want to get a baldurs gate game ,looks good but should i start with the first 1-Baldur's Gate & The Tales of the Sword Coast or just get the second 1?thanks(p.s. i have alredy posted this in the baldurs gate 2 form just wanted to know what u guys thought.
It's probably the same people in both forums.
I would suggest playing BG1 first because if you play the sequel then you will spoil BG1's story for yourself.

Baldur's Gate 2 continues the story of Baldur's Gate 1. As such, it really helps to play them in order. It will optimize your enjoyment of the games. BG is still a very good game. You can actually downloadBGTuTu if you get both games. It allows you to convert BG1 into the BG2 engine. So, you get the tweaks and improvements of the second game in the first game.
Want to reinforce the opinions that BG1 is the game to play first. I (foolishly) played BG2 first and ruined the amazing story of BG1, still a damn good game when I played through it though.
Faust has a point, Tutu will help you play through BG1, since the engine is beginning to be almost painful (compared to the spleandour of BG2

Baldur's Gate is a great game and half of the fun is playing a single character through Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate II:Shadows of Amn, and Baldur's Gate II:Throne of Bhaal. I finally did it without any mods or tweak packs with a paladin in BG that turned into a cavalier in BGII. It took a long time and every second was great! Give it a try!

That's exactly what I did. Continuity rocks. Also, playing them in order will allow you to solve the Pantaloons Enigma, which I am doing for the first time. Stupid me got rid of the Golden Pantaloons in BG1 as I didn't see why they were for.

Play BG1 first! Because...
Story: this it is one big Saga, with a beginning, middle, and end. Why miss the first part?
Characters: you'll appreciate some of them much more if you've played through BG1 first.
Gameplay:
There are many facets to running a party of 6 dudes. By starting at the begining levels, you'll acquire spells and abilities a few at a time. See what an ability does when you get it, and by the time you acquire another, you'll have learned how to effectively use the previous.
In BG2, your dudes will start at level 7 or higher. This gives a plethora of abilities at the very start of BG2, which may seem overwhelming. This may cause you to never use some of these abilities, or by the time you realize how to use some of them, you're too deep into the game to have them be effective.
IMO, starting at the beginning levels will make for a more versatile, smarter player.
Which is how I did it (otherwise I would've *never* been able to use the word 'plethora' in a sentence).

Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

I agree. BG1 first. Mainly for the story, but if for nothing else then just for the experience. If you don't learn how to control a party or how to strategize battles,or defeat enemies then BG2 is a very tough place to learn. BG1 brings you into it much better. Plus, you learn to appreciate the higher levels as you gain them. BG1 starts you at level 1 while BG2 will start you around level 7-8.
Mitch:You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning... Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?Mitch: No... Chris Knight:Why am I the only one who has that dream?
Starting Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn at a higher level is great if you've already played through Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast, but if you haven't played them and aren't familiar with the interface then it can be a little tricky. Baldur's Gate II is more advanced with graphics, characters, and quests; the original game makes for a great warm-up or practice arena for its sequal.
