I read somewhere that the Shadow Thief Guy who helps you find Imoen has a really good loot. Do I have to pickpocket him for the loot or will I kill him later on in the game? I still have to take the trip to Spellhold. I'm doing all of the other quests of chapter 3 first.

Unless you mean Aran Linvail, he will give you the loot at a time that he feels necessary (wont ruin it for you )
