Extreme Choppiness

Post by Goulum »

I was going to play this through again this afternoon, but when I went to go at it, I found absolutely unplayable. I can handle some choppiness, but this was just bad. I hadn't changed any settings since I last played it, haven't installed any new mods, nothing. Also, the SoA part is fine at least it was the last time I was playing it (about a week ago). Any ideas?

Slide down the difficulty levels. Check out if your party-used weapons are the same in the proficiency slots. Have spells memorized. Check out if your NPC has not very little constitution. Try re-installing if you think you may have installed some mod bymistake and cant remember.

Good luck!

Nonono, it's not the difficulty level that's getting me, it's just choppy. Like when there's animations it goes all slow and choppy. It's never happened before to me, and it's only in ToB that it happens. I tried reinstalling and not putting any mods in but it still does it.

Just a thought; have you installed a virus checker since with real-time monitoring; if so, turn that off.

Long shot I know but hey...

You know, there is a rare bug within the engine itself that causes this- it happened to me when I installed ToB. Have you tried patching the game?

Try closing out all other programs first before starting up BGII. Maybe you're overworking your processor. What type of machine do you have?

Is this slowdown exclusive to BG2? ie. do you experiance general choppiness working with windows, are any other games/apps slow?

I normally attribute random, out of the blue changes in computer performance to viruses and/or an infestation of spyware.

Tried simply reinstalling :p ?

I had this problem in one area. I turned off sound (by setting all volume controls within game to zero) and this seemed to solve it. I think it must have been one particlular sound that was causing the problem.

Gosh, didn't even notice anyone had replied! :o

Natalya- Is Norton Antivirus under that? I'm not exactly sure...
the_limey- Fully patched, Bioware and Baldurdash
Erenor- I don't really have anything else open, just Norton really. I'm running on XP, well over the system requirements.
Denethorn- Photoshop CS starts up kinda pokey, but I think it's always done that. CivIII hasn't changed much, SimCity4 is fine for the most part (small cities are fine, always been like that. Gotta get more ram for it), Neverwinter Nights is just great with the settings toned down but again, it's always been like that and finally, Age of Mythology is still pretty good. Now, I have a virus that Norton kinda missed, but that's fully my fault. I'll have to wait a while to get it outta there, as my PC can only get on the net once in a blue moon (on a mac currently). Reinstalling... don't even get me started on that. ;)
Goodforyou- I don't think it's the sound, because I've tried it late at night with the sound off so not to disturb my brother, with no luck.

What about your cache. Make sure that the cache is at least 300mb, and try it with more cache. You can change this in the settings outside of BG2.

My cache is at least 300, I think it's at about 450mb iirc. I tried decreasing it as well, just in case that would fix it, but no such luck.

Go into the graphics options in that menu and try turning things down. I remember I think I had a problem on a computer that was quite capable of playing, because I had the 3D effects enabled. Try toning down everything in there, also make sure you resolution is in the recommended range, as that too could be affecting it.

I've tried turning the specs thing in that general menu to the 'below recommended' setting, but I'll doing things manually as well. My resolution is set at 1024x768 or something like that I think. I'll change it to 800x600.
