High Level Cleric/Mage Spells

Post by Morcarack »

Yo!

I've been doing some more SoA, and after *FINALLY* beating the crap out of those bastard adventurers near the sewer entrance who wanted 1K from me, I managed to do the Cult Of The Unseeing Eye. (I had troubles there with Gauths and Beholders but Aerie Magic Missiled their asses and Minsc wailed on them, so I was ok. Still spent three days in the Pit Of The Unfaithful, though)

Anyway, after Minsc and Yoshimo and Nalia (and Aerie, I think, too) gained another level, (Aerie I think became 11 or 12, Minsc 10, Yoshimo 13[?] and Nalia 12-ish) I wondered when Aerie could do kickass spells like Fireshield, Summon Elementals, Summon Nishruu/Hadekshar and Improved Mantle. So basically, (Here's the question :P ) what level does Aerie need to be to gain the ability to cast:

Level 4/5/6/7 Mage spells (I saw Fireshield [Any color] was 4, so I figure she hasn't got that yet)
Level 6/7 Clerical spells

Yes, I learned the scrolls, so I figure Aerie needs a specific level to cast them. So does anybody know the levels?

A mage can cast lev. 5 spells at lev. 9, lev. 6 spells at lev. 12, lev. 7 spells at lev. 14, lev. 8 spells at lev. 16 and lev. 9 spells at lev. 18; a cleric can cast lev. 6 spells at lev. 11 and lev. 7 spells at lev. 14.

Aerie will take some time since she is multiclassed. That's the backdraw - mage levels are very expensive. You can basically look up the xp needed for the levels Lompo has named and multiply by 2 to figure out how much you need.

Multiclass characters are always like that. But by the end of BG2, Aerie is one of the most powerful figures on your team. She not only has the highest level mage and clerical spells available, but she can also cast all of them from within "trigger spells." This means she can toss several clerical as well as mage spells instantaneously, even without distorting time.

Excellent. Just making sure: Double the XP or double the level?

I'm currently trying to wail on Kangie but am having a little trouble cause Yoshimo gets Imprisoned before he can Sunfire Kangie's ass. Methinks I'll get a Prot. Magic Scroll from the Adventurer's Mart for him and try again.

Thanks people!

Double the needed xp, since they get divided by the two classes.

As for Kangaxx, he doesn't change targets in the base version, if you manage to protect the first person he attacks, you're basically the winner. Btw, there are several ways to overcome his attack, Prot from Magic is almost overkill. ;)

Pump up that one character with protections and you're good as gold against these single-targeting liches.

And I just found the ability to cast better than level 1 spells .. (This is funny :P )

I have been rambling through the game for some 30-odd ingame days, defeated all the Liches in Athkatla (except Kangie), and other assorted monsters without Mage spells. It took me that long to figure out the blue buttons cycled the Mage spell levels. Can you believe that? :P Nalia can do upto Level 6 Mage spells (I'd have used Summon Nishruu on Kangie except the Death bit about it where it dies from Death spells) and Aerie can do 5. I'm such a dumbass :P

Anyhoo, I got the spells now so I've got a new Kangie strategy: Use Wizard Eye/Fire Elemental as a target for the big Time Stop stuff, wail on the Lich till he's toast, (traps help big time) and then Summon Nishruu when the Demi-Lich shows up. I noticed (after numerous Demi-lich asskickings) the Demi-Lich never uses a death spell and since Nishruu's are invulnerable otherwise ... If it doesn't work I'm back to the drawing board *g*

Prot. Magic IS overkill probably, so I'm trying this one out. I tried an Aerie with Staff of Rhynn +4 and Spell Invulnerability (Abjugation) but all 4 of my spells run out, Aerie only hits 1's and can't get past "Barely Injured" because of the regeneration.

So, cheers. I just did Trademeet Animal Trouble with the new asskicking spells and am taking my second shot at Kangie.

PS: Spoiler for the Melee battle against the head Shadow Druid (if, like me, Jahiera couldn't solo it without healing pots/good weap/armor because she's low level [in my case 12]) ---

(highlight for spoiler)

NOTE: I refer to the druid you're using as Jahiera. Same applies for Cernd/any other druid you use.

Jahiera battles with no armor or weaps, BUT, while she's battling the Shadow Druid in that ring, you can use the rest of your characters in a very cheater-ish way:

1) Use your chars outside the ring to pick up Jahiera's stuff while she's battling. (Jahiera and the Druid keep hitting only 3 or 4 so there's ample time)

2) Get the chars with the stuff up close to the ring.

3) Get to Inventory. Take Jahiera's stuff and put it in her inventory. [You can do this: I used Yoshimo and my main and transferred all Jahiera's stuff to her inven, that's why they need to be close to the rng, so that they're near enough to transfer the stuff]

4) Watch Jahiera wail on the Shadow Druid. She can't put on body armor, [IE - Plate Mail, Full Plate Mail, Splint Mail, whatever she has] but shields, helms, etc. can be equipped, and since I gave her Gnasher and Dragon-Scale SHield, it was overkill]

NOTE: You can also get your chars close and make them "Lend" their armor and weaps to Jahiera for the fight

Heh. What can I say? My chars are wimpy so I use any advantage I get. If this is already a commonly-known trick, my apologies.

There's a easier way to defeat Faldorn... without any "cheating" like you did.

1st - Cast Insect Plague or Creeping Doom right at the beggining. Spellcasting Failure : 100%

2nd - Iron Skin

3rd - Jaheira : Summon Fire Elemental then Bash, Cernd : Werewolf, Bash. If you're a Totemic, Summon an Animal and Bash. Basically, try to do the more damages quickly to her while she can't cast (and she's not good with her staff).

Prot. from Magic is probably the single best spell in the whole game. Using it with simulacrums makes sure you'll never loose it as well (I know, cheeeese, CHEEEESE), and against kangaxx... Well... against anything that casts spell... (Can you say cheese, Irenicus?)

If you want to, you can pickpock the first avatar of Kangaxx for another ring of the Gaxx. So you have 2. Like 20% mag res, 6 hp reg every sec, 4 ac (i think), and a lot of cheese.

That was the cheesiest for a long time. Great fun! :D

You don't even have to waste that many spells. Insect Plague + Summon Woodland Being is enough. Then turn into a bear, werewolf or anything else that dishes out good damage, and attack. Battle won!

This really works well. The woodland being you summon can heal you if you need it and deal out some minor damage, while you ravage your opponent with melee attacks in the simplest of shape-changed forms. I've done it on the highest difficulty level with a wolf.
