Video card for KOTOR?

Post by feral »

First, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I was about to start playing the game last night and discovered, to my great disappointment, that my graphics card can't support it! It's ATI Rage 128. The game works but the characters are just white shapes with no textures. Not that much fun to play.

What would people recommend for an upgrade (that won't cost me a ton)?

Many thanks.

If you're looking for the cheapest possible card that will get you up and running properly, then you're probably looking for a card that has 32MB (rather than 64 or more) of video memory and belongs either to the ATI Radeon 8500 family, or the NVIDIA GeForce2 family, as these are the oldest cards supported.
I suppose it's possible that some of the more recent cards would be cheaper than the older ones, but I'd doubt it. Anybody out there know for sure?
Also, make sure to download the latest drivers from the card maker's website, that can make a big difference for how well things work.
Hope that helps.

Thanks! I ran a hardware compatibility check and it indicated that my card wasn't up to snuff and that I need a new driver, too. I figure I'll upgrade the card, then make sure the driver is OK. I'll probably have to throw in some more RAM to get to 512, too. So much for getting the game for a good price.

What does the card have to have for KOTOR to work? Is there a list of supported cards somewhere? (Sorry, I don't have the discs or manual with me right now)

The video card has to be at least 32MB and OpenGL 1.4 compatible (though the latter is usually not obviously listed in a card's description, so you just have to gamble sometimes)
There's a list of supported cards at http://www.lucasarts.com/products/swkotor/GI_system.html
As for system RAM, I have run it on a computer with only 256MB, and while you need to turn down some of the neat features to get the game to run smoothly, it works fairly well, so an upgrade to 512 isn't a must.
Hope that helps.
