A question with importing saved game!

Ok I have a saved game with a lvl 11 mage (or something like that, its been forever since I've played it) on the original Baldur's Gate. I want to know how to import that saved game to BG2, because lv 11 or whatever it was is preferable to lvl 7! I tried putting the save files in the save directory for BG2 but that didnt work... HELP!

Just start a new game, select import character and select from saved game. You can only import your character into BG2.

Edit - This is after you have copied the savegame to the Save directory of BG2
