favored class question

Post by dairy »

I've tried searching through old posts but I'm still confused as to exactly what a favored class is. I originally thought there might be a penalty for taking a class outside of your favored class. Now I really have no clue.

So, what is a favor class and what does it do?

Edit: I'm brand new to Ice Wind Dale and D&D based games

A favored class is the class which a certain race can take no experience penalty for if they multi-class with it. Normally, if two unfavored classes are at least 2 levels apart, the character gains an experience penalty.

For instance, a Half-Orc Barbarian 2/ Cleric 4 would take no experience penalty since Barbarian is the race's favored class. A Half-Orc Fighter 2/ Cleric 4, however, would gain the penalty since Half-Orcs do not favor either of those classes and they are 2 levels apart. A Half-Orc Barbarian 2/ Fighter 2/ Cleric 3 would not, but add another level of Cleric into that equation and BAM! Experience penalty!

Does that make sense?

Hey Galuf! Nice to see you :)

Absolutely! Does it make a difference if you take the favoured class before or after taking lvls in the other class? There are some races who's favoured class can be any class (humans, I guess) - they get no XP penalty at all in any combination? And how much exactly is that penalty, do you know?

And you too, my fair lady. ;)

I'm really under the impression that it doesn't matter which way the levels are taken, as long as the spread of the multi-class levels does not exceed 1 level away.

Yes, Humans and Half-Elves favor their highest-level class (for instance, a Half-Elf Bard 4/ Fighter 3 favors the Bard class). If said Half-Elf was a Bard 4/ Fighter 3/ Rogue 1, there'd be an EXP penalty for that.

How big the penalty is, I don't know. I'll have to save that for another day, unfortunately. :(

there is one minor difference between humans and half-elfs where the favoured class is always the highest class available and the favoured class of all other races:

the favoured class could also be the lowest and avoid the EXP if you have to higher classes within one level!

so a half-orc (barb) could be a:

cleric 8 - wizard 9 - barb 2

without EXP-penalty, while a human would get an EXP-penalty in this case!

EXP penalty is 20% for each class not within one level:

- fighter (fav.) 8 - rogue 5 - wizard 1 -> 20%

- fighter (fav.) 8 - rogue 5 - wizard 3 - cleric 1 -> 40%

...and so on...

Didn't I pretty much say this already? :confused:

Thanks a lot...that really helped me out.

But just so I'm clear, would it be fair to say that (with the exception of the exp. penalty and for role playing purposes) favored class has no bearing on the game?

...hmmm...-...not exactly that way... ;)

...and most people overlook that you can use the favoured class also this way...

If you mean does matching a race with its favoured class give some kind of bonus, then no. All it does is alleviate the experience point penalty when you multiclass. If you don't intend to multiclass, it has no real bearing on your game.
