Black Slaad impossible

Post by rakkasan25 »

I need a spoiler here. Cna't seem to defeat the Black slaad in the puzzler level or HOTU. Needless to say I've got a 25+ level ranger with +6 or better weapons, 29 Str, etc and I can barley scratch him. Any Ideas? Thanks

I don't remember this being a problem. (In fact, I am not quite sure which slaad you are talking about.) Could you be a bit more specific as to the problem you are having?

One thing to note is that some monsters are immune to certain types of weapons (ie slashing, piercing or bludgeoning). If you are having trouble damaging with one type, try switching to a different type. Another problem may be that the creature has something like stoneskin or ghostly visage which absorb all types of damage. Dispel magic can help here, as can doing elemental damage. Try examining the creature to see what sort of protections it has and act accordingly.

Sorry I can't be more help without a more specific question.

Black slaads are a species of monster.

He is the second guardian of the Path I think. IIRC normal Slaads absorb 25 damage on each hit, while this guy absorb something like 40 damage.

Thanks for the replies, all!

However, I needed a bit more detailed help, so I searched around in the Bioware forums, and this is how I finallly got him (yes, it's the second guardian, and my main problem was that he kept healing faster than I could hurt him):

1. Handing over the Astral Blade to someone who was better at handling it (Nathyrra) than myself - ouch, my self esteem! ;)

2. Equipping Deekin with a Morningstar (for some reason, someone at the Bioware forums suggested equipping him with a two-handed weapon - anyway, it seemed to work).

3. Summoning an Elder Water Elemental (duh - I didn't know you get a different elemental each time you cast the spell!).

4. Horrid Wilting seemed to hurt the guardian most of the limited spells I know.

Me, I'm a 'lazy' player - I never have the patience to read any manuals, or advice on choosing classes, abilities and so on. I just imported this character from - hmmm... - Baldur's Gate, I think. However, I'm beginning to get the impression that a half-elf might not be the best choice for a first-time player... *sighs*

Ah, that guy. I didn't remember him being a Slaad. Well, I'm glad you figured out a way to beat him. I didn't find him especially difficult, but now that I think about it, it did take a few rounds of fighting before I started doing damage.

In my case that wasn't a big problem because I had major damage immunity too as well as two weapons maxed out by Rizolvir (four if you count Nathyrra's). This is a good argument, by the way, for upgrading weapons. It is vastly expensive but it is the best money I ever spent.

The reason giving Deekin a two-handed weapon is a good idea is that two-handed weapns multiply the STR damage by 1.5. So if you have a 14 STR, the normal damage would be +2 but with a two-handed weapon it would be +3. Deekin starts with puny 8 STR, but his RDD levels can boost him up to about 16. Still not that great, by HotU standards but probably better than he would get with his crossbow. I didn't go this way since he dies too easily to be a good melee fighter, but I could see it helping if he had someone else to absorb the blows.

Thank you for explaining about Deekin and two-handed weapons!

Miraculously enough Deekin didn't die on me - the slaad kept changing his focus from one attacker to another, never staying focused long enough to actually kill anyone. We were all still alive (including the water elemental) at the end of the fight.

Well, i lost round 1 to the Slaad. What are those spells he casts that immediatly makes you die? Some kind of round orange circle appears under the characters and usually 1 of my henchmen die. I rolled a 1 on my next will save vs finger of death though. to bad.

But now he's gonna die somehow, usually i chop my way through everything in the game, but it seems this guy needs a little more then my regular attention... ;) To be continued....
