Pink Floyd v.s Metallica
I agree with jop. I see them to different to be compared. I listen to both as any normal rocker would do
But they can't be compared at all. Too different.

They show what people prefer stylisitically, but not really who is better. I just voted Metallica now because I think I actually prefer to listen to them.
Great live shows too.

Actually, I prefer pink floyd in concert to metallica in concert. I really dont think you can compare anything to a Pink Floyd stage show. When the first chords of In the Flesh went through the crowd, that was the most powerful moment out of all the concerts I've ever been too. And the audiences as well, A mellow old Pink Floyd audience with the occasional tripped out teenager, or the Loud, still old, drunk yelling person, with the ever present young, loud, drunk person. Pink Floyd speaks on so many levels, while metallica have the kick your face in level and thats it. Truly, anything after the black album is horrid and not worth hearing, while Roger Waters kept going after he left the band and created great music, and the rest of the band did as well. There really is no comparison IMHO who the better band is.

I've never seen floyd live, but I have seen footage of their shows. THey look like a lot of fun. I didn't mean to imply that Metallica was better live, just that they are fun live.
I actually thik Metallica speaks on a lot of levels too, but different one's than floyd. I suggest you sit down and listen to the first say three albums they put out. You'll see just as much depth as floyd.
Do you mean the album, or the video/DVD? Live At Pompeii is stunning to watch. They just re-released it as an expanded DVD. You (and everyone else here) should check it out (especially if you're a stoner
).
One of the things that I like about Pink Floyd is that they weren't afraid to try new things. Their concept albums (Animals, Wish You Were Here) are my favorites. Try listening to a Floyd album with headphones on- it is an experience (or, if you want, just try it with Echoes- you won't be let down).
I feel like I need to say something about Metallica here- for 15 years, no band rocked harder, louder, or more often. If you like heavy music at all, this is the Cadillac band. I think they will stand the test of time. And, even though I am a pretty serious fan, I actually like the album Load the best (Master of Puppets and the Black Album close behind). I know- a proclaimed Metallica fan liking a late album
. IMO anyone, even people who wouldn't otherwise like Metallica, can listen to and like the Black Album and like it.
lol, I am listening to Echoes on my headphones as we speak.

Yeah but Pink floyd kept it going for a longer time for metallica, by that I mean pink floyd has been kept their creativeness for a longer time.

Possibly. Metallica has gone in a completely different dierection now. They'll even admit they are like a whole new band. I don't think floyd's work really varied that much over their run

They are completely different genres of music so I cant realy say. If it were two bands that were closer in sound I might make a better choice but I would say early Metallica, anything before the Black Album. Pink Floyd music you just kind of sit there and listen but Metallica you realy get into. I lost all respect for Metallica but I also dislike Pink Floyds lead singer.(in Guitar World he spoke of his disdain of working in the band and he only liked a few Floyd songs)

Personally, I have no problem with the progression of music as Metallica got older, until they past oh, 4 years or so. The cover's and the new album grates on my nerves. I just sort of grew out of that style of music myself and can only listen to it rarely.
My problem isn't with their music, it's with the band itself. They aren't the same as when they first started, which is to be expected considering it's been more than 2 decades. Still....I've seen those videos of the guys recording in the back of the shows before they WERE Metallica, and how they were those first few years. They did what they wanted to, for their own reasons then. They pushed limits and now, it's just "hey we're here, we rocked so look at us. We're great". They got arrogant. Instead of maintaining that energy, and attitude they had at first, working to keep the crowd, they just started working the crowd over for money. There's a difference.

Well you have to remember that their original lead singer, I can't remember his name fight now, but he was a big drug attic (sp?) and they kicked him out of the band beacuse of that he would show up for practice half dressed or something and he wouldn't be able to sing or even play, so there for they kicked him out. AND they said that he could only write the songs and he couldn't show up to any of the gigs.
@Magrus, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I never listen to either one any more. IIRC Floyd is pretty ****y themselves.
Really, I haven't heard that at all. Then again, the only people I've talked to that were at one of their shows were so baked at the time they loved everyone.
My Lina was conceived at one of their shows too. Just figured I'd share that.

Well, I'm the same way with most of the British people I've met wandering around in my area. They give off an "I'm better than you and you should treat me so" vibe.

I don't travel much.
I mean, I've met some very nice British people, don't get me wrong. Far more than half of those I've actually met in person though, I couldn't tolerate. Then again, I tend to avoid dealing with the majority of humanity whenever I can because they irritate me so that's not saying a whole lot.

Hey, I never said all, I said most of those I've met in my area. There's a distinct difference there. Yes, where is she? There's a serious lack of female company on the board today.
