A second (better) Carth's Blaster

So I just completed the Leviathan and when I went back into my inventory, I had mysteriously acquired a second "Carth's Blaster"
More importantly, unlike the bug that duplicates Bendak's blaster, this is a different blaster than the first one. The basic stats are the same (2-7 damage, no attack bonus) but the upgrades do different things, and when fully upgraded it's considerably better (6-11 damage and +3 attack instead of 4-9 and +2) Also, in order to use the upgraded pistol, you must have rapid shot and power blast in addition to proficiency with blasters, which is unique among all the weapons I've seen.
So, has anyone else found this blaster? Does anyone know what spawns it?
My theory is that it has something to do with the fact that I had Carth using melee weapons on the Leviathan, but then he suddenly has a pistol during the in-engine cut scenes with Malak. Can anyone confirm this?

Hmm, yes, it seems that when you enter that battle, if Carth is carrying any melee weapon(s), it will automatically equip him with a blaster from your inventory (so he can do a bit of shooting during the cut scene), and plunk a second Carth's Blaster into your inventory. It seems that if Carth is carrying a ranged weapon, it won't do this, and if he's carrying nothing, it will just equip a blaster but not give you the new Carth's Blaster. Weird, but cool.
