helm's hold - desther
helm's hold - desther
funny thing happanes,
i'm trying to use the recall stone, and i get a message which
says: "the recall stone is unable to transport you from this area."
the tips i've seen speak of the use of the stone in that area,
so what's wrong?
thanks.

i couldn't help myself from taking a look in the walkthrough and in the tips given in the forums. it seems that all of them suggesting the use of the recall stone.
in any case, i'm a sorecrer (lev 8), always playing with a greal as a familiar.
desther and his fellow friends are to many for me to handle. is it possible
to finish it alone or do i need to hire a companion before entering this floor?
thanks.

I played through the whole game without using a henchman, so you should be able to handle it on your own.
About not being able to use the stone of recall...I really can't remember what the specific places were, where the use of the stone was prohibited. But if you've read in the walkthrough that it's possible, then it might be a bug(?). Have you downloaded the latest patch?

I can confirm that you indeed may not use the stone of recall in that area. The best thing to do (for me, a wizard, at least) was to lure desther to the dead-end hallway at the corner of the map and keep him occupied with a summon, my henchman and my familiar. Then run to the other end and rest.

Desther was really an easy battle IIRC. I can't remember my elven monk having any problems with him. But hey, my monk didn't even have any problem with someone later on in the game
Spoiler
I mean Klauth of course

that's b/c you were a melee type, desther is a pain for mage types, infact it could be one of the hardest battles in the game given the number of opponents and lack of a rest area.
as a sorc your options in this battle are pretty limited, you will run out of spells before you run out of bad guys.
plan a: pretend to be a fighter and buff yourself up w/ spells that will last awhile kill as much stuff as you can w/ melee damage, save spells for area blasting and desther.
plan b: use charged items, maybe that kid downstairs sells some, or scrolls. - pull out all the stops as things will get easier once you deal w/ him and level up some more.

You didn't bring any Wands of Fire or Missile? They can reduce most of the enemies there to dust. As the others say, use buff spells if you got them, or if you don't,try to attract some enemies and kill them with whatever weapon you got at hands.

I had kinda the same problem... the walkthrough tells you to use the Stone Of Recall, but you actually can`t and you can`t rest.
I had a fighter and still it was a hard fight until I figured out how to do it.
A little helpful trick is to bring the opponents to the door and close it behind them, so you can take on them one on one and get healed before you go for Deshter. Also remember to run as fast aas you can and get rid of the ritual creatures!
