I have been trying to play BG II from begining to end of Tob for a few times now and evertime I got bored due to the fact that I tend to repeat doing the same clasess or styles
clasess I allready tried:
priest of lathander- I thought he would make a better fighter but even with crom fayer he attacked way too slowly... Anomen is by far better, which is rather sad
sorcerer- nearly finished the game+ToB
fighter/mage- barely started but drew to the conclusion that due to the Xp cap I won't make it very far and won't enjoy the 20+ abilities and spells much
paladin- very powerfull... too streight forward (click and kill)
kensai/mage- ack, I just felt wrong playing a class that slew demigorgon on its own.... it was pure legit... but I did not enjoy it
ranger/druid- it is legit that you get all the spells but it does not make sense, many things can happen in a game, it does not mean those things were intended, I know the classic AD&D and this would never have been possible.
it felt wrong and I didn't like it much
the only group of clasess I did not try is the thief/bard crowd
I was considering a pure swashbuckler or blade(more likely swashy), what are your thoughts on this?
also if someone could tell me how the more advanced traps work, I mean, if you select them, it means you can way one per day? or is it a 1 time pick?
multi is not really an option cause you barely scrape lv 21 as a mage (which is the most popular choice)
class question
oh, on a side note, I wish to have fun
so any suggestion of how to exploit the system in a manner that will make the player a demi-god does not bode with my will
if indeed you think that a certain combination of clasess could be fun, please do post your thoughts on it... I just don't like power munchin'
I don't want to end up crawling on my legs and knees for being too weak nor do I want to roam around killing everything in sight in a matter of seconds
I want to have fun with a class that allows veriaty and the ability to go through the game from begining to end
I intend to play with a party and with no mods
again my thanks

Well I see the answer right in your own post! Make yourself a thief. I'd recommend the Assassin... x7 backstab multiplier, baby!!! Or just your regular thief is kinda cool too... personally I like making an (half)elven mage/thief and using the portrait where the char looks like he's whistling Ooooor you could simply make a bard... they are kinda cool, and their stronhold is awsome! For something slightly different, try the monk, though like the paladin they are pretty "point-and-kill"-ish, but have interesting special abilities.
I also once made a barababarnian with 3 INT (nice roleplaying capabilities) but didn't get much further than the Illithid city in Underdark...........
Edit: I need to get some sleep now... apparently my spelling skills have detoriated quite a bit.... you also wouldn't believe the sudden giggling fit I went into when I noticed my version of "barbarian"... I almost fell outta my chair... which happens to have armrests and some thingy that you can rest your neck on so falling out of it is actually HARD but... aw geez. wutevach
"Now the succubbus of blankets calls to me, and even my incredible saves are not enough... the mattress lulls me with infinate silence, and softness... I find my gaze constantly lifting from mine screen, and turning towards the double-edged mistress that is my bed..."

Well, if you don't want a simple click and kill character, I would advise against the swashbuckler, as they are more that way. For different play stlyes I would advise an Assasin, Blade or Skald. Though with the Blade, it is more of a click and kill character than the Skald.

In memorian: Fiona; Ravager; Lestat; Phreddie; and all of those from the 1500 incident. Lest we forget.
A lil' list of (multi?)classes that don't fall in the "Click and Kill" Category
- Cleric/Mage (Pure spellcaster, really destructive combos, legit, vast spell selection)
- Druid (Fighter/Druid is also an option)
- Bards (Unkitted or not... doesn't matter. Looks a bit like a Fighter/Mage)
- Archer (Well... you have to use "hit and run" tactics, but it's still a bit "Click and Kill")
- Thief (Backstabbs, Hide in Shadow, Traps... could be a Fighter(Kit?)/Thief)
- Assassin (Backstabs-only... or almost)
- Bounty Hunter (Lay traps to get rid of your enemies... a bit too easy for my own tastes, but you may like it!)
- Swashbuckler (Fighter/Thief without backstab... more a frontliner than any other thieves. Could also be Swashbuckler/Fighter dual-class!)
- Mage (Specialist or Generic - Kill them with spells... lots of spells!)
- Wild Mage (Really cool mage... fun to play because of Wild Surges)
- Monk (As said above... a bit redundent... but still have a few abilities, unlike a vanilla fighter)
- Sorcerer (I saw you already know them)
- Cleric/Thief (Really... from healing to buffs, with thieving skill.. its really a good class!)
- Rangers (Stalker is basically a Fighter/Thief... but can be cool)

Hla
Something to remember about the HLA's with multiclass characters:
It's your total XP that matters, not your individual class xp. Your Fighter/Mage idea was very valid... The only downside is that you have to start with Fighter HLA's, because you won't be able to select Mage HLA's 'til you can cast 9th lvl spells. Except for the bonus 6th, 7th, and 8th lvl spells. Those you can pick at their appropriate level.
I'd go with the mage/thief idea, though... The classes compliment each other well.
