May be a stupid question but...

Post by pailhead »

I'm heading to the 2nd level Dungeon at the Temple. I want to get the robe from the chest in the Inner Temple, but the chests are locked. How do I get into the chests? I can't get them to open. I have a Fighter/Rogue in my group and he doesn't do anything either. Any suggestions?

Thanks...

Well, I guess it's up to the ol' "21 questions," then...

1) If the blue text "Magically locked" does not appear over the chests, then you'll need more ranks in Open Lock. There may not be that many traps, but a vanilla (as in non-multiclass) Rogue with max ranks in OL can work wonders in some cases.

2) The thing is, a character who has a skill as a class skill can have as many ranks in a skill as their class level plus three. So, a level 6 rogue can have 9 ranks, and if the rogue had a Dexterity modifier of +3, they would treat the Open Lock skill as if they have 12 ranks in it.

3) I can't exactly calculate how many ranks are sufficient for non-magical locks in the temple, but I would say that a level-5 rogue with max ranks and 18 Dexterity would be sufficient for the upper levels of the temple. For level 2, I'd suggest a total (ranks + Dex modifier) of 13

4) Are you making sure that your Fighter/Rogue's gear isn't interfering with your OL skill? As long as that character isn't wearing armor or a shield with an Armor Check penalty, and is not encumbered, they shouldn't be having as much difficulty utilizing Open Lock. Do you also have a set of Thieving tools equipped?

Pardon if these questions to help you seem very obvious, but I don't entirely know what your experience is with both the game and 3.5 Edition Dungeons and Dragons.

You need to make sure your rogue has ranks in open lock, and hopefully has a pack of thieves tools. You also need to make sure he's the one selected when you're trying to open the chest. Then you need to right click on the chest and pick open locks from the radial menu. The rogue should kneel and wipe his brow. It'll tell you if you succeed. Then open the chest as normal. If you fail, you'll need more ranks in open lock (or a boost to dex or something else that'll improve your open lock skill). If all else fails, you can try a knock spell with a wizard.
