Is there a time limit on the game?

Post by Mr.Waesel »

My characters have only ~300k xp each and I'm at day 500 already. I was just wondering, is there a time limit, like 999 days? If so, what happens afterwards?

What have you been doing?

I've never heard of a time limit, but I've never heard of someone getting close to 999 days neither... ;)

I just started soloing a fighter/thief, and I usually need to rest around 20 days to fill my hp back up. (It is quite annoying)

Why don't you just use the ring of regen? It is available very early in the game for just such a reason...

That, or the Cloak of the Sewerns which allows you to turn into a troll and regen while sleeping. No need to rest 20 days when you easily can get fully healed in 20 min. :)

Plus at that point in the game you should be able to splash out on healing potions and healing at temples. I suppose just resting until healed is the lazyman option ;)

Yeah, I plan on doing that once I've dualed to thief. I'll just have to deal with it until then I suppose.

You know, I'm not an expert on BG2 etiquitte, but I think you can use other PCs for periods of time, if only to achieve an end- ie: activate a quest, etc. You could probably just grab Yoshimo and get the ring of regen. Resting for 20 days at a stretch is ridiculous.

That's actually a good idea. Why I didn't think of it, is beyond me. Cheers.

500 Days, yikes. And I thought my 35 days in chapter 6 was a lot.

The easiest way to get HP back for a solo character if you don't have any regeneration items is (if your CON is high enough) to cast "Draw Upon Holy Might" right before going to sleep. If this boosts your CON to 20 or higher, you will regenerate all night. This works with Barbarians too. :)

There are a few quests in this game with a time limit, but not many. If you do hit 999, tell us what happens!

Well, it isn't really true soloing if you pick up other people. But that is the eternal question, is picking up someone to get there quest a violation of the true point of soloing, I believe if you solo, you pick up no one. But if you believe that it is ok to have extra party members when you solo, then you do it.

I was overflowing with potions of healing in my games O_o , a thing I noticed is when I try doing the resting while in troll form is I'd not actually heal anything or not very much.

Short duration spells seem to actually deactivate like a second after I rest.

While we're on the subject, what's a typical game length for you?

I'm currently in Chapter 4, at day 56 (though I have made sure I got every quest going and spent about 10 days hanging around waiting for the Jaheira romance to resolve).

Played the game right through in about 65 days before, but I wondered what the average was.

Well, I'm around day 40 or so at the beginning of chapter 7. I've done every single quest available up to this point without switching party members except the one in the Forest of Tethyr, and I've also killed both the shadow dragon and Firkraag, and every lich in the game. I usually only rest when I absolutely have to: ie my party is fatigued and I have no spells left, or in order to progress a quest. Although, if I had done things in a slightly different order, I probably could have shaved a few days off of that time. By the way, how much time exactly do you spend on that ship? Is it 7 days?

I try to rest every night (after sunset, before midnight, more or less).

Within the city, I rest in my stronghold. Outside the city, I try to find an inn, or other 'safe' shelter (Garren's cabin in Windspear Hills, for example).

This adds a little bit of challenge, trying to make it thru a whole day without resting till nightfall.

And it adds to the realism. Which, of course, is of paramount importance in a Dungeons-&-Dragons Magic-Is-Everywhere I'm-A-Child-Of-Bhall game.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...
