Is Fable the best RPG (Role Playing Game) ever made? Hell no, it isn't even an RPG, it's a linear action adventure game with lite-RPG elements. Personally I agree with "it comes down to personal preferences", but this game isn't a role playing game, and as far as I'm concerned it shouldn't be called one either. Basically if you've played Fallout and understood how everything worked to great extremes (like me), then you already no what a proper CRPG (Character Role Playing Game) is all about.

A proper CRPG comes down to a depth based game world and story line, something that excites you to participate in, something that has great atmosphere and immersion. In my opinion Fable lacks these things. First of all a proper RPG revoles around a very strong source of non-linearity, depth, and open endedness. Aside from the obvious importance of a decent character creation and progression system, multiple solutions and overall approach methods to the completion of quests and overcoming of randomly generated or self imposed situations is extremely necessary, Fable again lacks most of these elements.

Fable's graphics engine as the one major aspect of that game that gets people's attention (which is sad), has weird flaws, the NPC models are overused constantly, the character models are stiff, lack any type of fluid motion capture, have horribly exaggerated bodily proportions, and aren't attractive in any way. Regardless, it's way too linear, in terms of exploration, the game world has annoyingly restrictive terrain (as one other poster mentioned), that prohibits random wandering because of barriers and invisible walls.

The role playing game elements are hard to see, you can only accomplish quests either good or evil, no options for just basic quest solutions that aren't based on being good or bad. The morality system is awful and terribly unbalanced (I shouldn't recieve more evil points for divorce than I do murder, or more evil points for petty theft than unprovoked assault upon an innocent civilian).

The conversation system doesn't exist, in its place are patheticly humorous 'expressions' that are stupid meaningless acts of repetitive sounds and gestures that are supposed to represent an emotion  Basically there are no optional factions that give the choice to join, no enormous aimless worlds to explore, a morality system that was made by idiots, an extremely linear game world split into regions that take 30-45 seconds to cross. A very short story, very little replay value, overly exaggerated NPC models that all look like LSD addled loonies, a humorously stupid expressions system, and overall not enough PLAYER CHOICE!

I personally would give this game a 4.5 out of 10 in the RPG genre, but since it isn't an RPG and is just a linear action game, I'll give it a 5.5-6.5 out of 10. If you want to know why I dislike this game so much, it's simple I waited 2-3+ years for the greatest, most non-linear RPG ever and got an action platformer, everyone go play Fallout, Fallout 2, Arcanum, Diablo, Diablo 2, the Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, KOTOR/KOTOR 2, or Baldur's Gate, because Fable isn't worth your time. Sorry for the long post.

All you are doing by creating this poll is overrating both games. I never wanted to play this game beacuse of it's overratedness. Halo was only allright, the story sucked though. So both games are overrated. :o   :o

Like other posters I prefer Morrowind, I enjoyed fable, although the good/evil thing reminded me a lot of KOTOR. I liked the marriage aspect of it that was quite fun but overall I don't think there was enough in it to keep me occupied. I don't like the linear gameplay, although there are a few sidequests its much more centred on the main quest than anything. The bloodline thing wasn't really explained that well - for example why did you get the option to have the sword of aeons at the end? If the sister had to be killed to use it, surely the hero would have to die too to unlock its power?? Morrowind is a lot more open ended (even if it does crash everytime I try to do the bloodmoon expansion - stoopid xbox) and you can spend hours upon hours trying to complete all the quests.

Good but not the best

IMO,

Fable is good but not the best. For it's price tag, I would expect a little more. The graphics are cute, and the gameplay is good. The story is commendable as well.

But coming from the world of D2X, Final Fantasy, KOTOR and NWN, I have to add this:
Come on... that is all the weapons and armour that they can dish out?

I like the super limit breaks, the super combat moves and the godly summons in Final Fantasy. I was expecting something of that in Fable. Some sort of spell or summon more powerful that Enflame. I was also expecting a "wipe the screen clean of monsters" summon or spell. Force push is fun but not damaging enough. Sure nice to have a major move or spell like that when facing nymphs and hordes of hobbes.

But no other complaints. Fable's still fun to have around.
In the end, everything will be alright. If it is not alright, it is not the end.

I would say Fable has the best engine compared to other RPGs, unlike other RPG companies whose engine is a utter crap, Fable can be basically modified in almost every way imaginable because the engine was built that way.

Morrowmind mods are a joke.

Besides that, the game sucked. Constant modding would make it better but only a few people even know how to code properly to do it.

Sheesh. "Morrowind mods are a joke"? Exactly how many Morrowind mods that are circulating have you tried?

Did you try Tusar, with its three-sided conflict and lengthy quest system that leads to multiple conclusions, depending upon whom you support?

Haldenshore, with its entirely new city, the ability to actually build your own Thieves Guild--and derive increasing revenues as you perform upgrade quests?

DH's Furniture Shop and Potted Plants, with more than 200 new meshes and textures, all in furniture you can buy, add, and move around a home you acquire--including plants that periodically grow from seeds and flower, creating herbs you can harvest and use in making potions?

Erengard Mines, which lets you control more than a dozen aspects of mining supply and demand in the countryside, to turn a profit?

Pegas Horse Ranch, which lets you hire from a variety of differently rated trainers and attempt to breed, ride, and sell your own horses?

Suran Underground, which adds roughly 30 hours worth of dungeon exploration?

You *do* realize that at least 30 quest mods I could name feature diverse, challenging gameplay that each supply 25 hours or more to the game? At least 10 add 50+ hours. With all new shops, items, rewards, NPCs, buildings, guilds, spells, etc.

If you're going to criticize a game and the mods that have been made of it, at least attempt to know something about them before you comment. Then those same remarks might have value.

I think you've misunderstood that post, okay let me see, if I put Halo 2 into Fable it will stay as Halo 2, if I put Halo 2 into Morrowmind it will screw up the game program.

The Fable engine is designed to take third party code(mod tools not created for the purpose of adding objects into the engine) regardless of compatibility. That's what amazes me. Besides that, nothing special.

You may have changed your mind over what you meant to say, but you certainly said it clearly enough at the time:

Morrowmind mods are a joke. Besides that, the game sucked. Constant modding would make it better but only a few people even know how to code properly to do it.

So, you're saying that few people know how to mod Morrowind properly. And I can give you a list of more than 300 good mods, well-constructed in every respect, that demonstrate otherwise. So your remarks above are wrong.

It should be noted that you can play Morrowind mods simultaneously, unlike some other RPGs. My current "sucky" Morrowind game has more than 300 hours of continuous gameplay going for it, with a wide range of new features.

So, yes, the knowledgeable modding community is there for Morrowind. Several good modders in fact check regularly in our MW forum at GameBanshee, and at least a few good mods have been headquartered and originated, there. You certainly don't have to like it, but at least be accurate about it.

fable...

it isnt brilliant because of all the stuff they ripped out but that happened with halo 2 aswell the thing about fable is it has re-playability i must have completed over over again about 15 times now and im only just starting to get bored if there definatly is a fable 2 then hopefully lionhead will have learned from thier 'mistakes' and not hype it up so much.

Fable should be destroyed and wipped from the face of the earth. I greatly disliked the game and it was to stupid.

Guys, speaking strictly as a moderator, here, if you can't get along in the sandbox, you're going to get kicked out of it. Fair warning. ;)

Just a suggestion: if you want to say your piece, say it in more than one-line gush of praise or spew of venom. That'll net you a bit more respect, and understanding for your position.

fable and morrowind?

well its obvious alot of people like both fable and morrowind...

theyre both great games fable on the short and good side morrowind more of an epic never ending really oversized rpg that never (or just takes a really long time) gets old.

alot of people like the "for every choice there is a consequence" thing. i also happend to like that...and i liked it alot.

People liked the epic size of morrowind and how many items there are and how it seems to take such a lengthy time to exploit every thing in the game. it could actually take years depending on your gaming style or speed... either way it takes a loooong time. also once or if you can take a look at every thing in morrowind theres always mods that vary so much and enhance it by a lot...

now i love both games but who here agrees with me if something came out that was a mix, an epic changing storyine good or evil decisions and all the other good stuff from both games and packed it all into one giant game... a morrowind fable hybrid... that would be great...

...who agrees?

Re:
no way. It feels like this game was made buy noobs. The end was terrible and some of it doesn't make sense. For example Lady Grey and her murdered sister has nothing to do with the game but should be part a main quest. The unfeeling mother & sister along with the inarticulate joke of a hero makes this game bad. The clocks and resting are no good either. The money is bad. The shields and armour are bad with no options. I give it a 2 out of 10. No dragons and jump and no true 1st perspective bring this game to the ground.
I have the complete game fable: lost chapters though it did take a little while to come out (5 1/2 months)and I would say I entirely disagree with you...

The dragon thats in the game, arena, and everything else is magnificient. It's a stupendous game in both art and playability. The original game was lacking in some areas but this, I give this 10 out of 10 for me. There is very little else that could be added to such an RPG. My problem isn't with any of fable's faults persay, its with the ridiculous glitches these game disks seem to be having....I wish it wouldn't happen to mine.

I play PC games - and I noticed which game Fable: TLC reminded me most of...

JKIII: Jedi Academy

It's all there - weak, but somewhat enjoyable plot; minimal choice. The only difference was that Fable's combat system was FAR weaker...

There are also simalarities with the Dynasty warriors series in terms of combat...

Comparing with other RPG's

-Morrowind: Great Mods, somewhat shoddy graphics (However many retextures have been done by the excellent modders), bland NPC's (however LGNPC project helps, and the NPC's are hardly as bland as Fable's), extreme long gameplay and replay value...

-KotOR 1 and 2: Great combat system, interactions with NPC's, better graphics than Fable, alignment choices that actually affect the game - and the game ending.

-Dungeon Siege: Has all of Fables major faults (lack of in-game customisation, lack of plot, lack of interaction) but actually gives you a party to use, and a large election of spells...

Fable, like B&W2, fails to live up to Lionhead's hype about open-endedness.
