Slow, slow performance - any help appreciated

Post by toddhd »

DL runs incredibly slow on my system, and I'm not sure why. I have a GeForce 5700, 2Ghz Intel Processor, 512MB memory, 120GB HD, etc. Games like Doom3. Half Life 2 and Unreal 2004 run just fine, with maybe a few tweaks here and there.

The problem is, unless I do something like look at the ground, or go into an enclosed area, my framerate drops so low it starts to look like a slideshow. I tried turning off shadows, turned off tree and grass detail, turned off camera smoothing as well. I've already tweaked my virtual memory settings from playing the other FPS's mentioned. I'm not really sure what else to do?

I was hoping someone might know if there are any special settings I should pay attention to. I'm dying left and right because as soon as enemies show up, the framerate goes to heck, and it is hard to "time" your moves in a situation like that. Unless I look at the ground while I fight, but then I can't see what's around me.

Thanks

most of the game settings in DL don;t work. U can't turn off shadows for example, which would help u a great deal. Set your vid driver to minimum. Set resoltion in game option to lowest setting, exit game, and then restart game for the setting to work.

This is yet-another area under review for the 1.2 patch. As it's due later this week, I'm eager to see the changes. ;)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Ah... that would be why nothing seems to make a bit of difference!

Ok, thank you for the info. At least I know I'm not crazy. It would nice to see 1.2 address these issues, the the automap is something I hope shows up as well (and that it works decently). The game is fun so far, just frustrating to try and play.

I had the exact same thing happen to me and I found a way to fix it. I ran a spyware program and deleted all of the files it found that were bad, and also before I run the game I shut down all of the programs that show up in the task bar at the bottom. For some reason when I was playing some program kept trying to open while I was playing and would cause the game to quit. Now the game runs perfect, no unexpected quits or slow framerates. I also right click the task bar at the bottom and choose the task manager and end some processes that I felt I did not need running while I was playing. Like I said this worked great for me. I would give it a try.

yeah i'm with ya, i have a geforce fx 5800, athlon xp 3000+ .. the framerate is OK in most places, but there are certain places where it just plummets, particularly right now i'm in the temple of naga, and there are tons of multiple light sources, and the framerate is about 3x as slow as it is outside. i get average 30fps outside. so my naga performance is about 10-20 usually and sometimes drops to about 5fps if i am fighting a big pack of monsters. i wish i could turn off the shadows. should be better on the patch :)

well i have a athlon 2400 with a g-force 3 and it chunks, so i don't think it is an issue with the computers, otherwise your guys computers could run it fine. when does the 1.2 come out?!

guys - this deffenetly cant be hardware problem... i aint running on the lowest graphs and the pc i use right now is 2,0duron;512mem;gf4mx440;viakt600.

U should check for stuff like adware, even some defraging would do some good. Also it might be a cooling problem. Make sure ur cpu-s and gpu-s aren't under a rape of dust...

Still, this game needs some upgrades cuz it doesn't seem to clear memory enough... another problem is with loading in some areas. My pc sometimes freezes for about 10sek. And i'm sure it aint the system nor the hardware.
