I once had a little teaparty, this afternoon at three, twas was very small, three guests in all; I, myself, and me. myself ate up the sandwhiches, while i drank up the tea. twas also i that ate the pie,and passed the cake to me

Grimar, all of these men are absolutely abominable guitar wankers who worship at the altar of proficiency at the expense of making music which is at all real or heartfelt. I think Satriani very narrowly takes the edge, as he manages to refrain more than Vai and Malmsteen from rehashing Paganini and playing Beethoven on an electric guitar. 'Neo-classical' in architecture had successes, but in rock music it is atrocious. The aim of their music is personal ego-gratification, which, as I see it as an apalling use of music, makes them all the opposite of 'great musicians'. That is, wankers
Steve Vai gets a couple of points for being in Bill & Ted, Joe Satriani gets a couple for inventing this style of music (virtuoso neo-classical wank rock)...but they are all abysmal failures.
They are also guilty of fomenting musical elitism, encouragin guitarists everywhere to believe that knowing the cadence of your minor second and diminished fifth is more important than writing half-decent songs or wailing hard, and making music which is capable only of appealing to guitarists, having only technical appeal and no heart appeal or sex appeal.
Have a listen to Link Wray or D*ck Dale, and you may discover a more real kind of guitar hero. Down with wank, chiz

I have no idea who Vai is, but I think the man in White Stripes is named Vai or something like that.... Can that be the man you are talking about?

when it comes to speed, noone matches Malmsteen, but that's pretty much the only thing he can do too. BTW. Malmsteen is in most of his works, inspired by Bach, not Beethoven. When it comes to technique, I think that Vai pretty much takes the lead here. While Satriani have a larger repatoir to play on.
I wouldn't say that any of these are the *best* guitar players, but rather great guitar players at their field.

I would probably vote for Alexi Laiho or Alexander Kuoppala as well if I could.

That would be Jack White, actually. Glad you mentioned him though, as he is a pretty talented guitarist despite being prone somewhat to fretwankery.
