problem with installing the game

Post by jack828 »

hi,

I 've played the game before (was almost at the end for the first time) but my computer crashed a few days ago. I've installed everything like it should (windows and updates, latest drivers,...) but now when i try to install the game i get an error.

error 1305 error reading from file c:\vampire\puck004.vpk check that the file exists and that you can access it.

I always press again, but it just keeps happining till i press cancel.

Any thoughts on what i should do?

any help would be appreciated

It sounds like you solved your other problem. That being the case, in the future, please PM (send a personal message) to the forum mods asking that your older thread be removed. If you no longer need help on an issue, it saves the time of members replying when we remove it. Thanks.

Regarding your current problem: this sounds like a CD error, or a CD-ROM drive error. If you have two CD-ROM drives, try installing through the other one. Or bring your disks to a friend's house, and try installing it there--just to see if you can. If you get the same error, then chances are the disks are defective.

You could try exchanging the discs. However, that didnt work for me... In the end I had to swap a much older cd-drive into my comp, and install from there. I'm pretty sure its the cd-drive not being able to deal with the copyright protection.

If you can't get your hands on a different drive, u might want to try activion's support... Also, updating installshield was something activision told me to do after asking if the discs looked defective -- any deep scratches, any weird marks on the underside...

Hope u get it the game installed and playable! :)

there are two scratches on the first cd. I don't know how they got there because i take very good care of my cd's. and about trying another cd drive: the game used to install just fine in my cd drive and now it doesn't install in any drive i've tried. so i do think its the cd

will try updating installshield anyway

thanks for the help

Little-known trick: Try copying the CD to your hard disk and installing from there. No guarantees, but it's been known to work in the past as long as there isn't any copy-protection on the CD.

I've used that, as well. If it doesn't work, your best bet might be to contact the publishers, and see about getting an exchange for the scratched disc.

Or get one of those scratch recovery packages. I've never used one on a computer disk, but they've brought more than one movie DVD back from the grave.
