Skills question. Increasing them.

Post by zolanthor »

Does increasing certain skills help anything at all? like athletics, you get swimming and tumbling from it....but does increasing it past 4th level do anything? What about other skills like use light weapons adn magical weapons. do increasing skills like these help with AB or damage in anyway....or benefit anything other that be a minimal requirment to use certain weapons? I have alot of advancement points stored up for lack of knowing this. didn't want to waste them by putting them into something that is useless.

The simple answer is yes.

Weapon Skill give you special attacks as of Level 5. Also, some weapons/armour has penalties if your skill level is too low for it. Last but not least, in order to use magical weapons (the magic in them) your Magic Weapon Skill needs to be equal to or higher than the weapon.

Finally, you need at least Level 3 in a Skill to go to the next class (ie. Light Weapons => Medium Weapons => Heavy Weapons) and you can only increase a higher class up to the level of the class below it.

Does this answer your question? Read the Manual that came with the game.

But Zed, I think the question is that after you meet these requirements, what do skills like atheletics, weapon, and armor skills do? If you need 5 levels in light weapon/magic weapon to use a specific weapon without a penalty, then what benifit if any do you get for putting 6 or 7 or 15 points into either of those skills?

The only benefit (I can see) after Level 5 in a skill is the ability to use better Items without a penalty. The exception is the inspection/remove traps skill which allows you to open higher level chests. And even here I have yet to encounter a Level 9 chest.

once you have the high strength you can bash better than disarm, I get 64% chance on all treasure chests to bash and the damage is like a Gnat tickling me.

I never noticed that the game tells you the bash chance. Have to look out for it. What is your STR btw?

Alrighty, Thanks for the feedback. I'll just up my mage abilities and my attributes unless i run across a weapon that requires more points in a wepaon skill. :)

within the game it doesn't tell you, but if you increase athletics upto 5 that will cause your character to side-step and walk backwards a little faster.

pumping up magic skills has improved benefits such as longer duration and more damage.
bargain is also worth getting upto a certain point because spells aren't cheap.
