How to kill a Fire Drake in several easy steps
1) Decide if you really want to do this...make sure you have clean undies on
2) Run near a drake getting it to chase you
3) try to lure it into the trees when it comes low to the ground
4) position yourself such that a tree is blocking the drake's fire but remain fairly close to the fire...this will cause the drake to stop moving around treesas the AI now thinks your close enough for direct attacks
5) Exaust all of you Ice and Nova magiks on the drake...do not waste time with fire based magiks
6) Summon as many rats, wolves, and undead as you can
7) Cast whatever protection magiks you have on your self
8) Switch to your sword
9) Run to the tail of the drake...it will focus on your summoned creatures until they are dead
10) Attack even if it seems to high to hit with your sword
11) When it has finished your summoned creatures it will attack you with fire by initially braething under itself...this is a good time to back around the tree
12) switch to your bow and sidestep a bit until you start hitting the drake with arrows
13) Continue until your magiks have replenished then repeat.
I took out three this way so far at level 11 and 12 wearing plate armor and wielding the sword of speed. Good luck warriors...the first I used mainly bow as I was experimenting to see what would hit the drake it took about an hour with just the bow.

Holy you know what!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, I decided to take on the Fire Drakes. And, holey you know what, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to pull this one off. I'm a Level 12 Knight/Paladin/Adept (forget what else), using only a Fathian Long Bow. D'oh! It was going alright (if that term's a good one when fighting a Fire Drake) -- I was getting him down pretty good in HP (yellow --woo-hoo!). I tried some of the tactics here (hiding behind trees, using my bow), and was eventually able to get right up close to him and use my Elven Sword of Speed. So it was going alright.
Until another one showed up. Now, my friends, I think I'm really out of luck!

Dragons
Hi,
you can use Fire-Burst(each ball makes about 10 damage) and magic Missle (10 damage) as well to take one down (Arcane Magic at lvl 10).
Took 6 dragons down now, but always one by one (about 300.000 xp per dragon).
Ice-Magic is the best so far, with about 20 load of a ice spell (do not know the name right now, but it sprays from your hands for a while) I could bring him almost down. Nova Magic (the ring thingy) makes about 40 damage, but the reloading time is very high - you have to be on the move all the time to get not blown away.
Its worse to kill some dragons, because i found two lvl 8 chests with nice stuff in there if you reload often to get what you want (deathlord boots and dragon shield).

I killed the three fire drakes (dragons?) near Arindale using a different tactic. Since neither ice shard nor ice ball seems to hit the drakes when they are in the trees, I ran up to the drake using my shield in the parry position (that way the firebreath does no damage unless it bounces off something near you like a tree or wall)
I then bashed it using the dwarven frost axe in my main hand and the kriss of darkness in my off hand. Since the dragon freezes after the first hit and cannot fight back, it's easy to make a nice dragon pie out of it

I am able to kill fire drakes in straight up melee with the following:
Fire Ward celestial spell. Its awesome, especially with points in celestial magic.
Duel light weapon skill
Lots of points in dexterity and agility
Any magic weapon in main hand, such as the crystal of light and any scepter. Any decent non-magic weapon in off hand.
All this and no cold/ice attack, so it is do-able by anyone without spending tens of thousands in gold for ice blast. This is very expensive and may require you to buy or find up to 80 spells, far fewer though if you have 12-15 in arcane magic. Hellman what is your Arcane level? You can also get lucky and find a winter weapon as a random drop that you can equip. I've used both these methods before though, and they are the best, especially using a magic weapon with the "Winter" mod. Whats good about the duel wield method is that anyone can use it if they take either the marauder or samurai class. No gold spending or cheating involved, no luck involved also since you will find a good weapon at some point.

@frodo1:
My Arcane level is about 10 I think... must have a closer look when I am home.
I'm a Battlemage and on my quest to get a Deathlord. I've spend some money on spells, because my main intention was to get a great battlemage, but not knowing in the beginning how it will work with the class system I got the Deathlord quest and so I am something in between fighter and wizard.
But I will try the drakes with the dual wield mode. Hopefully I get it to work with my weapons.
Winter weapon would be fine, but up to now, nothing found in that direction. Maybe the vale of ruins(my next destination) will bring some usefull stuff to the daylight.

I am not sure if a fourth nest is there... But I killed 5 drakes in that area. Sometimes they respawn I think. In the Vale of Ruin I got some random encounters with 2 or 3 drakes.
My favority up to now is the "Ice shards" spell. The drake takes four or five times damage with a total about 40-50 points. The spell is cheap, the drake cannot move, you can redo it very fast.
The "Ward of Fire" is very helpfull to get not toasted by them
rechecked.... the dwartven winteraxe does it best.... i did 10-40dam per hit, it takes about half a minute after the first hit...
Ya, this is the first winter weapon i used to kill a drake, it really works well. I just found a winter dagger though with 2-5 damage and it's effective too. Just takes a little more time, thats all. I want to try the winter polearm though. That might be wild.
Also, aren't drakes supposed to be male dragons, like a drake duck? If so, where are the females, especially on the nests. Female dragons are especially protective of eggs in most mythologies.

I killed the three nesting ones by finding a nice, cozy spot equidistant from all of them and spending some quality time with my bow.
I saved about every half an hour, just in case another drake showed up to toast me.

nah...you are not screwed, but Lady Fortune is giving you her blessing. Save the game, quit game and turn the ecounter level to LESS if you haven't already done so (so you won't be disturbed by other critters, or the chances are less). Backup (or run, if it has already spotted you) until it just stop following you and spits fireballs at you. Take out your bow (you may need to back up a few steps more) and shoot at it. It prolly would take about half an hour to kill a fire drake with bow, but not every day you could have a random encounter that will net you 300k+ exp.
Alternatively, you could get it stucked on a tree or the signpost and have some free shooting at it.
