I always have my Kensai / Theif "use any item" the Staff of the Magi, then sneak up on the kobolds and hit them with my bare fist (always immediately re-equipping the staff to avoid retaliation, of course).

With Kensai damage bonus and backstab, and of course my 25 STR (cause I went through BG 7 times to get the tomes, OK???) I do about 75 points of "incapacitating" damage, which knocks the kobold unconscious.

This tactic doesn't actually KILL the kobold, but it really gives him something to think about!

So next question, is there a difference between cheese and overkill? :D

well first off you can eat chesse ;P but the only real difrence is you can overkill without cheese because if you fighting like kobold party of like 80 lol and dont get a scrath that overkill using 80 dif death spells on those little mongrels is cheese ;P
Life sucks deal with it

Re: cheesy killings of kobalds--I don't think this is possible. What makes some tactics cheesy is that they exploit weaknesses in the game design to accomplish things you would never possibly get away with if a real DM were supervising. But anybody can kill a Kobold.

But if we could please get back on the topic of the cheese guild: I want to humbly submit my application. For my interview I will smack you with my Staff of the Magi and click on its icon again to go invisible, then repeat. Am I in?

Spork: I think if you really want to be part of the guild, you should probably have your kensai/mage's SIMULACRUM use their simulated staff!

have your simulacram cast it again...send the second copy to draw fire while the first one attacks, repeatedly reequipping the staff of magi. all the while your actual PC is no where on screen even

how about this:

6 fighter/mages with 6 vhalior's helm (how did that get there) cast simulacrum.
now the 12 use the helm.
now you have the 24 cast tensors
now they surround the kobolds and they all use the daystar ability at the same time
any survivors should get 24 horrid withlings for breakfast and if that doesnt work just use 24 deathspells if that still fails beat them up

Hey now, overkill <> cheese...

Just doing 723 damage to a Kobold is not inherently cheesy, it's the way you do it that counts.

For true cheese, I suggest using the Fake Talk on the Kobold (or Dragon, Lick, ...), so he can't fight back. Doesn't get any cheesier than that, IMHO. :D

Problem in your math: Any character may have only one simulacrum. And a Simulacrum of a simulacrum is lame (although it still has spells, albeit 0.6 * 0.6 = 0.36 of your level [Ex: L16; S1=L10; S2=L6 (if it rounds up)]).

But simulacrum is a really cheesy spell.

The way I see it cheese is boring and a nessesary mean (for some ;) ) overkill is loads of fun :D and a great oppertunity to go :MUAHAHAHAHA

great overkills:

unreal turnament: an enemy is not dead before his body has suffered a "chunky death" and don't forget to shot at the pices that will be left over.

counter-strike: you have to shot at the dead body untill it dissapears or next round starts (after you gave him an AWP shot right in the eye)

Dune Emperior: taking out scouts....this can not be done with less than 12 devastators shoting at once! deathhand can be used if short of devastators ;)

Solders of furtune: remember that an opponet has 1 head, two arms and two legs....all can come of, so do it!

BG2: overkilling kobolds...magic missle. :D

overkill as Demoman in TFC -> kill a guy and leave a detpack on top of him

cheesy kobolds BG2 -> holy smite (did it 1 hour ago in spellhold and cleared the kobold room with one spell)

overkilling kobolds BG2 -> put 3 fireballs on sequencer, blast in center of kobolds, serve with french fries.

BTW i overkilled a mouse near cromwel's house cause it was blocking the stairs -> i gave him the "finger" (of death) he miraculosly saved :( i got mad but 3 magic missiles on sequencer, blew him to tiny pieces.

Using up any spell, item charge or potion to kill a kobold is not cheesy, but just dumb (not to say that it can't be fun).

Using cheese in a fight means you make winning too easy because you exploit the shortcomings of the game design to your advantage. Can you imagine a PnP game where the characters tried some BG2 cheese strategies against their foes? The DM would just laugh and smack them down. In fact, I think this is a good litmus test for what's cheesy. By this test, using time stop, a bunch of horrid wilting spells or whirlwind attacks on a kobold is not cheesy. I don't see why a good DM would prevent you from doing this.

But there are plenty of good reasons why you shouldn't be able to kill Demogorgon with just 4 cloudkills while he's off the screen (unless you role-play him as suicidal and eager to back to his home plane ;) ). Because a DM would never allow that strategy to succeed, it's cheesy. So what do you think of this as a test for cheese?

cheesy way to kill a kobold. Have your mage take the and of cloudkill and fire 50 cloudkills at the direction where the kobold is.

OR

Have your cleric cast the pre battle spells, have your mage summon some monsters and lure the kobold out with a fighter. The beast comes charging in, occupy it with summoned monsters, and remember to cast silence 15 radius so that the monsters can't talk to each other and rebel against you. Now hope your archer can hit the enemy by firing arrows inches away from the summoned. If the monsters rebel, quickly take em out with your warriors, and cast gate. The kobold and pit fiend will duke it out for a few minutes, but then the kobold will summon a balor which the pit fiend will fight and those will die. The kobold will attack your fighters. Keep on hammering it with spells and swords. Eventually it will die. I can't seem to beat it without losing at least 2 of my party members so have some resseruct spells handy. Certainly one of the tougher battles in the game.

Spork you are totally on track about the DM thing. There are so many things that the computer will let you get away with where a real DM would come up with something to stop you...it seems like this has lead to people sort of having to DM themselves, to police their game a little and say "even though the computer will let me do this, I can see that it's cheesy and I'm not going to do it".

And by the way, that thing about the mouse making its save when it got the finger of death is the funniest f'in thing ever! I'll have to remember to 'Doom' any rodents before I cast like 7th level death spells on them in the future!
