Beholder in the cult of The Eyeless quest not showing

Post by werebeargoddess »

It's really weird. You know how the beholder is supposed to show up after you get the second half of the rod? Well, for some reason, he's not showing up for me. I'll get this message saying smething about the fact that I've got both halves of the rod and how I should equip it, but no beholder at all. What's up with it?
I wanted to change my sig, but I can't think of anything to change it to :(

Usually he showed up for me 2 - 3 secs after I've equipped the rod. You do that, he'll come behind you from the corridor from where you entered to get the rod. Be carefull about the Beholder, he's much harder than the others, and its impossible to disrupt his spells - or at least disrupting his spells never happened to me.
Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.

Luis Antonio is right. You need to equip the artifact in your rapid access slot, otherwise the beholder is nobody knows where :) When you equip it, the beholder usually appears when you wander a while.

Okay, that might help. I had equiped it to my quick item slot, but I don't think I waited long enough. Thanks.

You know what? I've never had to equip the rod to have the beholder come.

I have, however, had to loot the pool to gain that half in order to spawn him about 10 seconds later in the hallway outside the room, though.

Yes, he always appears for me in at the left end of the entrance passage to the cavern where you find the second half of the rod.

This may not be what you wanted to hear, but I think there is a bug with his appearance. The first time I played it through, he appeared and snuffed my only character with Raise Dead capability before I could hit him with the Device. I reloaded, of course, but he never appeared again thereafter with that particular party.

I did a search on this site and there have been other report of this phenomenon. Maybe that's what's happening to you.

The second and third time I played that quest the beholder appeared a few steps out the cavern, a few seconds after I equipped the rod.
Although, the firs time I played the Beholder showed itself in the Cult, near the place I first met Gaal. I thought that the Beholder appeared because I've killed Gaal, but now I think it showed itselft just after equipping the artifact :)
So I think it could appear at any place, always a few steps in the shadows after you equip the artifact

Yeah, I've had that happen.

One solution is to go talk to Gaal, because then the Beholder is summoned.

Once the Beholder engages in dialogue, the lower reaches is closed.

The trick is to equip a party member with boots of speed. Get that character to talk to Gaal, and then run to the place to get to the lower reaches. That way, you get twice the experience, because you kill the Beholder twice.

Heh, the beholder showed up for me. Yay! He showed up a little bit after I got the rod. :D

Wait, Gaal was supposed to summon him or somtething? I don't know. I think I killed Gaal, or something, but I can't remember now. I know I went back to him after I killed the Beholder.

If you kill the Beholder in the lower reaches and then talk to Gaal, he doesn't summon it.

If you talk to Gaal and then engage in dialogue with the Beholder, you can't kill the lower reaches Beholder.

If you talk to Gaal without talking to the Beholder, you can kill the Lower Reaches one, and then kill the Gaal one.

2 for the price of 1 :D
