I've edited your thread to include a "spoilers" designation, per our ABOUT SPOILERS: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING sticky thread. Please do this, in the future. Thanks!

The reply wasn't necessary, and no attitude is needed on this board. There's a reason for the rule. In fact, we just got three complaints this morning because somebody gave away spoilers in a BG2 thread title--there are still new players, and they don't want to know about game plot details before they arise naturally. I really, really don't enjoy taking off from my work to read complaints and edit thread titles.

And if you want to reply to this message, please click on my name, and choose to send me a personal message. It keeps from cluttering up the boards.

In answer to your question; note, further SPOILERS...

Go by ship. There's a battle, and a piece of a legendary item you'll acquire. You don't get it if you go by portal. I'll provide more details about the item, if you'd like, but that's up to you. ;)

I'd advise taking the ship. You get more experience and the game last's longer. Plus, you really do get more stuff!
Mitch:You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning... Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?Mitch: No... Chris Knight:Why am I the only one who has that dream?

Going through the portal is simply to skip a part of the game. As the other people have said, you get good stuff going through the ship, but you end up eventually at the place you come through in the portal.

In other words, the portal skips something, whereas by boat you end up in the same place.
In memorian: Fiona; Ravager; Lestat; Phreddie; and all of those from the 1500 incident. Lest we forget.

Yep the portal is a short cut.

Portal: Miss stuff

Ship: Gain stuff

Taking the ship is by far the better option.

SPOILERS

Couldn't have said it better - going with Saemon on the ship gives you all sorts of opportunities to get new nifty items you won't get to if you go through the portal. :)
I sincerely wish we could re-consider this plan from a perspective that involved pants.
