alrighty, I think that any good guitarist should know these guys or your a newb!! Vai has a cool style..its like a sexy rock that can blow your mind(especialy with his double neck) and Joe has an insain fret shred like you've never seen..but...come on Yngwie is GOD!!!!! go listen to some I am a Viking or his neoclassic far beyond the sun and that just blows the hell out of most other stuff, the only things that can compete are justin king stuff or surfing with the aliens by Joe or like liberty.

agree. love that malmsteen song. but he's absolute kick-ass song is barque&roll(sp?), number 6 on the Attack cd... now THAT is fast playing. i'm not a big fan of joe, but i love Vai. ever heard "Crossroads"(the movie). just that scene where that litle kid have that guitar duel with steve. i love that part :)
Wich Bands are these artists from?
None of these guys are permanant members of a single band or anything like that. They are all solo artists who have released their own music, as well as collaborating with other artists.

Steve Vai has played with a lot of more recognizable artists, such as Alice Cooper, David Lee Roth and was the replacement guitarist for Whitesnake when Vandenberg couldn't play due to health concerns on some of their CD's.He's also appears in the movie "Crossroads" as the devil's guitarist in the ending guitar duel between himself and Ralph Machio's character (Ry Cooder did the slide guitar work for Ralph in the movie).

Satriani is a solo act as well, in adition to being a mentor for other guitarists. Kirk Hammet of Metallica is one of his students, and has always been extremely forthright in crediting Satriani for his role in developing Hammets style of playing pretty much from the beginning of Metallica's recording career.

Malmsteen as well had a few records to hit in the 80's, but I never really got into his playing all that much, so I'm not real up on what other work he may have done.

These guys tour together pretty frequently in the G3 tours.

Depending on your viewpoint, they are either metal gods who's technical prowesss pushes the limits of guitar playing, or they are the symbol for everything that people percieve to be wrong with rock music because their technical prowess takes precedence over mood and feel in thier playing.

Personally, I tend to find myself in the middle of that thinking. To me, at times they sound really good, and at times they all sound like their just running through scale excersises.

Just a little info for people who weren't sure who these people were, and by no mean an in depth veiw of their careers, but this may help a bit.

know what you mean about that "feeling" thing. but i think that steve got enough feeling and emotion in his work.....

Depends on your tastes. Like I said, to me, they run hot and cold. At times, I think they sacrifice a bit of songsmanship in trade off for speed, technical brilliance, etc. When they do hit it, they hit it out of the park. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of Vai's stuff, I just understand when other people say he's too flashy where their coming from, cause I get that feel on the stuff I don't like as much.

Then again, I'm used to playing with guitarists who annoy the Hell outta me by worshipping at the alter of shred.Speed doesn't automatically equal good, it just equals fast. And a lot of the people I've been around personally simply concentrate on the tech side without ever developing a feel for what their playing. The best speed players are the guys who understand there's a time for it, and a time to lay back a little. Vai definatly has some things I think are awesome, but at times, he just tends to drift a little too much for my tastes.

Thanks BS for giving a little background there. :) Good to see you back again too! :D

To me, music is just noise if there's no emotional inspiration and "feeling" to it. Lyric's are junk without the same thing. Thats just my opinion though. :o

Thats the problem with alot of modern music... pop, rap, rock or otherwise.
There's also the problem of the completely opposite - overwhelming emotion with little musical quality (as seen in the current trashy "emo" (emotional) punk craze).

It's alright? No public beating? No mis-quoting of offending post to deal out maximium humiliation? No tossing the mistaken party to the drunken farm dwellers to appease their questionable desires?

I have been away for far too long

You save the tension, frustration and sadism up. If you let it out too often it becomes cliche. No, you hold it in, and let 'em have it all at once and shock everyone. ;)
