To gain a starting base, you could always investigate the murder of Ralen Hlaalo... ;)

And, if you join any of the Great Houses you will eventually acquire a stronghold. House Hlaalu provides you with a base near Balmora.

You could always join the fighters guild and kill Dura Gra Bol then use her house as well as dragon wench's suggestion.

Guys, if you're going to post spoilers, please indicate that. Read the site owner's sticky thread, PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING. (duh.) ;) I've already gotten one complaint this morning, Dark Sage, from someone who didn't want to know the contents of your post in advance. I really don't like taking time off from work to deal with this kind of thing. :D

And of course
Spoiler
House Redoran evetually gives you the quest to get the manor next door to that of Ralen Hlaalo. If you DO join House Redoran DON'T kill him first. If you don't I belive there are no adverse effects to just killing him and swiping his house. I belive however, that the body in the Hlaalo mansion is a limitless container?
Mag: Don't remember much at all of last night do you?
Me: put simply.... No :D
Mag: From what I put together of your late night drunken ramblings? Vodka, 3 girls, and then we played tic-tac-toe and slapped each other around.

This is what I do. In fact, that old lady wandering around in the back of Balmora outside of Caius' house when you first go speak to him? She gets knocked off, I pick the lock to her house and stuff it full of whatever stuff I come across. It's situated fairly close to the center of all parts of town that I use a lot. The trainer's and thieves guild are right around there, across the canal you have all of the shops and the rest of the guilds as well. :)
