Fighter or Thief, magic is just a soap bubble in this game for now. It can be of help to the warrior, but can not be the main tool of the wizard. I recomend fighter, because the 4 level chests can be unlocked with 3 Inspect and 2 Disarm, and a single 5 level chest in the Theater can be opened later - it is right near the exit. And such a level of skills in not a problem for a fighter.

it is easier to get through the beginning of the game with a fighter but once you get to fargrove you can join the mage's guild and accend to a wizard class.

Depends whether you want a challenge or not.

Try getting through the game as a wizard without using armour :D Probably impossible but definately a challenge.

A subtle masochism, I'd say

Even WITH an armor - you will be no wizard, but a staff-warrior. I've tried - just for experiment - to use a crack and I had 100 in Channel. And you know - L1 stones of celestial magic were regenerating 1 point a second (i.e. 1 healing in 2 minutes :o ), but a higher level (L5) stones regenerated at rate of 1 point in 5 seconds, so we have 1 spell a ten minutes of real time!!!
I remind again - with 100 in Channel.

Any more questions abuout spellcasting? :D

Hmmm... Perhaps, in 1.1 the situation is better. Does it depend on your intellegence, level, or ammount of books?

I think more spellbooks also ups the regeneration rate.

Out of boredom and, having defeated the game once already I have decided to go on a masochistic streak and play a spellcaster according to the old AD&D rules (no armour heavier than leather, no edged weapons for clerics, nothing edged higher than a dagger for mages).

I started off as an Adept and once in Fargrove joined the Sisterhood and, the Mages guild. So far so good as I want to progress to:
Adept/Mage/Enchantress/Sorceror/Wizard

My question is as follows:
The Celestial Order has asked me if I want to join (even though I started as an adept). If I do and, place the candle in the Shrine, can I still become an enchantress or, am I stuck doing the path of adepts?

I'm pretty sure the initiation quest just gives you your first tier class (which you already have) and nothing more.

SWC
Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"
Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."
