I've played this game through a number of times and never seem to find some of the really good items, even in HoF mode!
I'm really hanging out for the Charged Shortword of Wounding +5, Massive Greataxe of Flame, Battleaxe of Decay +5 and a bunch of other great weapons and armour that just never seem to show up!
Am I just missing things here? Are these wepaons actually obtainable in the game?

conercerning armour / shields - some were forgotten to implement but you can get these items with the Weidu mod!
AFAIK all weapons are in - but are random (and random in IWD2 = very low chance to find) so it's possible that you will never see them - even if you play the game several times!
btw. I would plan parties / PCs on items you find for sure for this reason

I agree with Silverdragon's advice. Always plan your party with items that are a sure thing.
However, random items are like presents. You can't beat a great random drop. My favorites have been a +2 Greataxe dropping in the Targos battle, a halberd of flame from the goblin warren, and +1 large/tower shields. These are moments that make this game fun and exiting. A lot of quests, treasure spots and boss mobs can drop nearly anything. It could be crap or the best equipment your party will have for a long time.
