Books: Till Death do us Part?
"Normal" is completely subjective. I love it. Normal for me is smurfs and sleep deprivation, depravity and kinkyness.

"Oh, so I can crate you and hide you in the warehouse at the end of Raiders?"
"So funny, kiss me funny boy!" / *Sprays mace* " I know, I know, bad for the ozone"

I don't have many books at all, and those I have are mostly textbooks, reference literature and some classical works that I have difficulties being without. I used to read a during my whole upbringing, from age 3 until I started uni and course textbooks became too dominating. Neither my parents nor I would never have afforded to by even 1/10 of all these books. As a teen, I sometimes read 2-3 books a day, certainly 10 a week since I'm a very fast reader. I always carried a book wherever I went. I borrowed them from libraries, and then about once a month or once every second month, my father would take the car and drive all the books back.
I love literature and reading, but I am not especially attached to books as objects, and nowadays I seldom have time to read anything else than scientific papers.

Er, you're not the only one. I moved in September, and I, too, am moving at the end of the month. When I moved in September, I had lived there for 15 years. So you can imagine there was a fair share of clutter in that house. Not to mention the office; with a WALL full of books. Trust me, it was hectic. We went to the dump so many times cleaning that place. My mother burned like 200 books in a firepit out back. Haha those things were useless.peh.
And no, you don't need junk piles.

Okay, that makes me feel *much* better. Happily the books are basically done with.... they comprise five fullsize boxes..
Fortunately, we have only been in this place 4 years and it is quite small. So we have been restricted in the amount of stuff we could have accumulated. But even so... It's a mammoth task and I'm very glad it won't be us lifting those boxes of books

I thought you said you had *a lot* of books?
I've got twenty-four "bankers boxes" full of books in one of my closets, plus the books I have on my bookshelves and in odd places around the house (reference books in my office, cookbooks in the kitchen, etc.).

I don't think books are especially worth having just for the sake of having them...
If they are beautiful books then they should be kept, but I think the veneration of the smell, the tactile sensation and every aspect of books like they were holy is a marketing ploy to ensare the educated middle class.

The important bit is the story or what-have-you, burn your paperbacks when you've read them (or send them to me!).

lol! Fair point
Okay, it feels as though there are a lot of books after spending so long trying to pack them.
Regarding keeping books as "objects."
It is not the material presence of books so much as the ideas, the stories, or the recollections that they embody. Though, I'm not sure I make sense, and the inevitable question that seems to arise is, "but do we need the physical books to be aware of or 'hold' these ideas."

The idea behind your suggestion was very good and I will tell you that you can keep all the storage things which are as useful as not would be conductive as storage bins. It is the proper way that makes your things will be storage as felicitous way.Magrus wrote:Aside from the couch and queen size bed I put into storage, the heaviest thing I moved was my big container full of novel's. My mother assumed it was full of blankets or clothes (it was one of those large plastic bins you can buy) and nearly killed herself in the driveway trying to lift it.
I keep all of my books. I used to sell them and get more and then about 6 months later I'd be kicking myself for not having my old favorites. No, your not alone.
