I couldn't beat it for the first try either, I went on to the Fell Wood and even further (I guess the Monastery is the last poiint you can turn back from) to bring my party to higher lvls, then had my wizard to fight the monsters until I got Mace of Disruption, and then my cleric took care of the rest.
As for my wizard, it was pretty easy with Disintegrate (I don't know exactly at what lvl you can cast that spell), only some of the monsters saved it.
Battle squares
The battle square joys
Hey all,
This is my second time through IWDII, and both times I completed the full battle squares when I first came upon them. All it takes is A LOT of patience LOL
As mentioned above, save before each round, use any buffing spells possible, and go hack and slash. I cannot remember at which level it is, but both times I've played through these, I received as a reward a Mace of Disruption. Without this mace I probably wouldn't be able to have completed all of them. This mace will destroy most every creature you come up against if they fail their saving throw. If all else fails, just keep reloading until you destroy a creature, then save, then do it all over again.
Keep in mind that you can also run back to Oswald and get more healing potions if you need em.
So overall, just have patience and the rewards are quite worth it.

It’s the sensible, logical thing to do, of course, which is why we don’t do it.

Battle squares are easy with a cheesey tactic. Yes, you didn't read wrong.
As you notice there are two doors which giant creatures can not pass. With using this advantage and by the help of a greatsword (or any destructive two handed weapon) you can hit and run every time. And buffing spells like bull's strength are obviously usefull.
I did for the first time i played the game and just i saw the squares.

if you go for melee hit in run isn't that usefull as you don't have the problem to get killed...
...the problem is to kill some monsters in 60 seconds (especially demons & undead) and with "hit and run" you would reduce the maximum number of hits in 60 seconds!

Easiest way to beat the Battle Sqaures? Summon pets. Undead are the best, but elementals or other monsters will do as well. Have your spell caster start the level and teleport your party away. Summon your pets all around the spawn point and chose a tile. While your pets pound away, have the spellcaster fire away with missile weapons or spells.
The only probnlem with this is that sometimes when your party teleports away, some or all of your pets go too. This can stop you summoning more as you may have reached you 6 creature limit. If this happens, just have your party forced attack and kill off the summoned creatures waiting with them to free up some summon slots.
This is the most reliable way I've fond, a few undead can handle pretty much anything that gets summoned in 60 seconds with a little back up. As loing as you have a reasonable level spell caster you should be able to clear BS without leaving the temple. It will take a LONG time though.
