Rhode Island....I have a step-brother in Maryland. Closest thing. You could try kidnapping Jenica on your way through Pennsylvania, in Allentown if you wanted.
I wonder why Americans bother so much with the 4th of juli. Here it's the 21st of juli (might be august too), and for one day the king comes out of his palace, some old F16's fly over Brussels and a group of 80-year old royalists goes to a military parade. The other 99,97% of Belgium stays home and drinks a beer. I never really understood the fuss about a national holiday
I could explain why independence days are celebrated everywhere in the world except Belgium, from a nationalistic Dutch point of view. But it would be lame.

Because nationalism is cultivated as a part of American society. In most of Europe, especially in the urban population, nationalism is not viewed as something positive.
In Sweden, the national day was installed as a public holiday for the first time this year. According to polls, less than 10% celebrated it. I worked, but many people simply took the opportunity to see friends, party, be with the family or other non-related-to-nationalism activities. Some anti-racist organisations demonstrated and burned flags at the streets in the most touristed area in Stockholm, which caused some confusion among the many foreign tourists who thought Swedes celebrated the national day in a highly unusual way.

No. (Their independence day is the official break-up with glorious Holland... Why celebrate such a huge mistake?)<-- Highlight only if you have nothing better to do.

@ Magrus,
I should warn you, July 1 is Canada's national holiday, so chances are that there will still be lingering drunkeness
Have you been to Toronto before? Try to check out a district called The Annex. It's pretty cool and funky, with various good drinking establishments, restaurants etc. I think you might like it

Drunken people around me is encouraged when I've been drinking, no worries. I earned a few nicknames for the encouragements I give to anyone and everyone I see to do shots and keep up with me. If you see a town full of people passed out drunk on the news, I've been there.
I haven't been there since I was oh, 15 or so and with my parents. Never "off the leash" I would say. Although, the police did ask my parents to bring me home asap on that visit.
The Annex hmm? I'll see if my friends know of it. If not, they're dragging me with them, they're taking me! I'll check it out.

LMAO! I know national holidays are celebrated with more enthousiasm in Southern Europe, but nearly none of the northern european countries (Germany, the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, ...) seem to make a big fuss about it. I guess we don't care much about when exactly our country became independent

@CE - I think you may have a miopic view in claiming that nationalism is not seen as positive throughout Europe, even among the urban population. Nationalism is not taught in schools here, but take a look at UEFA cup matches and you will find evidence of abundent nationalism.

Myopic.
I think cheering at your countries football team is highly different from the idea that your nation and your culture is superior to others.
