Temple Catacombs

Post by mre13 »

Hi--I have a Level 7 Elf Mage/Fighter currently in the Temple Catacombs. Is it just me or are the odds in the game extremely high against my character here? I am trapped on a staircase by a headless, tons of bats and a horde of skeletons. I'm not looking for an easy setting for the game, but is my character just too low level to be in here?

Thanks!

Your character is fine. My suggestion, if you don't want to fight so many monsters, then go to options and set "Random Encounters" to less.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

You should know your own strenght better not to enter some creepy dark place with 13 ghosts in it. The last time I went in there, I was lv 9 Warrior (you won't survive as mage, especially ELVE) and still having trouble fighting them.

Yes, those headless zombies are very scary and deadly (it can stun you too) I am sure you rather fight a troll (cause troll dunno how to use shield). To solve your problem:

-1st: Do what Siberys said-Option-Random Counter-less (you fight less monsters, which make you safe, but slow level up) Here is a thing about this option "what there already there, what not be there won't be there" Meaning all the monster that there when you save game will still there. However the next wave they won't spawn as much as it should be.

-2nd: Those headless, you won't be able to fight them hand-to-hand, 1 wack would make you fly, especially if you are Elve or Mage. "Use range weapon and keep the distance" . Now, get out the tomb and get yourself a bow or dagger (to throw), buy some potion too.

-3rd: Then go back in the tomb, run faraway from the Headless, take out your sword start swinging to rid all the bats (keep the distance from Headless)
When you done = only you and the Headless left. Now switch to your range weapon and start nail him down, he will block most of it, but also take most of the attack. That should solve your little "Scary" movie problem.

PS: 1) I think there are at least 2 and at most 4 in the catacomb. Listen to the footstep sound to know and get ready.

2) If he get to close, raise your shield to block to avoid getting stun. However, that freaking huge axe will destroy your shield in 10 hits, since you can only carry one of each type of shield, make sure you have 2-3 different types of shield in your inventory.

3) Make sure you know some magic attack or carry magic weapon (y? those white ghost ONLY take damage by magic and they can freeze you, not that deadly but very anoying)

4) Use shield to block smoke when you fight the BOSS. (also recommend to keep distance and use range vs. Boss)

5) DO NOT stand behind the mummy coffin while you open it. If you get stuck, that your problem now, and it gonna cost ya. (BUG!!!)

Well hope all of these will help some new people ;) , since this new game got a hive of bugs.

Oh!!! one more thing, if you really trapped by the monster. You have no choice but to die, they should walk away from your dead body. Wait until they far away the revive and run like hell.

not that I want to pick a fight, but an elven mage is pretty do-able in the catacomb, at level 6. I just did that. Just make sure you turn down the encounters to avoid uneccessory encounters.

Use Freezing Touch. Activate the spell, while keeping a distance from the Headless Brute, then as soon as the spell is ready (your hands are covered with ice), charge at him and swing away. If you hit him, he'll be frozen and as long as you still have Freezing Touch (either books or scrolls will do, you should've gotten lotsa them in the sewer/theater dungeon), keep uisng it after a few swing. If you got the timing right, you could keep him frozen and keep swinging at him. That's how you fight him hand-to-hand. Also, use the pause function (pressing - E to call up the equipment menu) when you got nailed down or when you need extra time casting the Freezing Touch.

Yes, use your bow/throwing knife if you run out of Freezing Touch before killing him. Keep running to and fro in the passage, don't run far away in to other sections or you may trigger other spawns.
PS: 1) I think there are at least 2 and at most 4 in the catacomb. Listen to the footstep sound to know and get ready.
There is only 1 fixed Headless Brute. When you first enter the large hall from the entrance, on your lef hand side is a passage, turn left at the junction there if you want to fight him, else avoid going there if you don't want the trouble. Any extra Headless Brute you meet there are random encounters (which, you may consider yourself lucky to have such random spawn).
2) If he get to close, raise your shield to block to avoid getting stun. However, that freaking huge axe will destroy your shield in 10 hits, since you can only carry one of each type of shield, make sure you have 2-3 different types of shield in your inventory.

Wrong. They are damage-able by physical attack, and is inmune to Ice magic. Just raise your shield and aproach them. When you get close enough (in close combat range - whatever the range of your weapon is) wait till they stop blowing Ice Shard and swing at them. Don't be greedy, 1 or 2 hit is enough and raise your shield to anticipate the next Ice attack. Keep on doing so till they died.
4) Use shield to block smoke when you fight the BOSS. (also recommend to keep distance and use range vs. Boss)
or if you got choked, call the Equipment menu and wait till your character stop caughing and gasping.
5) DO NOT stand behind the mummy coffin while you open it. If you get stuck, that your problem now, and it gonna cost ya. (BUG!!!)
You are talking about Tomb of Souls, while people are talking about the Catacomb in Fargrove Monastary...You got to Tomb of Souls at level 9? Impressing.

I didn't have many problems with my elven mage in the catacombs either. The only problem was a random encounter with 2 wraiths....I reloaded that one.

I did encounter 2 headless brutes, but gulping potions got me through those encounters. Also make use of the hole in the floor, lure them back there and climb up and use ranged weapons.

For the boss I summoned some undead and used range weapons to finish him off.

Actually, during my first round in DL, my fighter got trapped at the same spot mre13 mentioned, there are 2 hordes (yes, I noticed they spawned seperately)of skeletons, 2 wraiths (they come hand in hand) and of course our favorite brute. I spend 30+ minutes dying to clear these creeps (espacially hated those wraiths). Only later to realize why my attacks are ineffective upon them -- I've got -45 panelty!! yuck!
